I want to start investing myself in the Touhou Project series but the timeline confuses me and there are so many parts, where should i begin?

@ThatAroAce Yeah, it' intimidating, but aside from 'play the games', the only real solution here is to try to find doujins that retell the plot of the games. Unfortunately, I can't think of any off the top of my head that deals with the entire story. If you want, I can spend some time putting together a list. If you're looking at the Touhouwiki, you should know that only the section 'Windows games' actually matter: the first five games are very rarely mentioned in the fandom.

Yeah, the early games are rather strange and only somewhat canon, though still worth playing if you're into them. Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil, the first Windows game, is the go-to starting point, though some of the other entries might be more forgiving if you're bad at SHMUPs.

Picking something canon from Zun would be a good starting point I think, then go from there. There's thousands of stuff to get into, I'd highly reccomend it. To make it simplier I'd pick a group you like then learn of them and branch out from there.
EOSD as ComfyCave said with Remilia and those who live at the Scarlet devil mansion. There's the Moon princess Kaguya and gang. There's a lot characters to take in. The easiest might to follow stories that follow Reimu. The main character relatively speaking. So Wild and Horned Hermit a canon work I think would be a good start.
I could write an essay on the wonders of Touhou lol But I'll spare everyone that mess.

Also Kogasa being assertive is a nice thing to see, usually she ends up on the receiving end. Esp with Sanae

I'll echo what Freya said, and say that you may as well just find a character that looks interesting, look them up on the touhou wiki, and then read about the game they're from. Assuming the character isn't Reimu or Marisa. If it's one of them I guess starting by learning about Embodiment of Scarlet Devil would probably be the place to start. It's pretty easy to get lost in the wiki once you start reading, but that's the best place for canon information. There's usually a section for fanon representations of the characters on each's page, so you should be good for finding out why, for example, people are always talking about Sakuya and pads.
That's all crazy talk! Just read yuri doujins until it makes sense. That's what I did (See my only list under my username). Now I help scanlate the damn things!

@ThatAroAce To be fair you can just fall down the rabbit hole and suddenly find yourself recognizing all the characters (at least that was what happened to me)
