^I've been tempted to scrape the site for data to drive an analytics analysis regarding the relative popularity of ships, doujins, authors, and tags. The top-k lists and plots would be interesting. It wouldn't be very conclusive, though, since it's just one site. I know somebody did a similar analysis of the Harry Potter fandom, but used a few fanfiction sites for reference irrc.

It would only make arguments about OTPs even more unbearable than they already are. As soon as people consider 1 ship OTP, that is when discussion stops, because there is nothing to discuss, it is the best ship and anything else is heresy, blasphemy, wrong. OTPs are what killed any discussion about ships. Just look at LL or Madoka and tell me you can have any discussions about ships there. Just let everyone ship whatever they want. Do you really need to prove what you like is "the best" that much?

Rather than using the data as a means of arguing one ship over another, I think such an analysis would be cool just as a way of summarizing previous work in the fandom and potentially informing general trends over time, depending upon the scope.
Personally, I'm not one to get super hyped about particular ships. Good lesbian stories are hard to find. Why invest life energy in ship wars when you could be searching for your next heartwarming and/or educational depiction of a culture so starved of decent representation?
It's good you pointed that out, though. Knowledge is power and power in the wrong hands yields pain rather than progress.

When it comes down to TOB, I doubt I'm down for a war over Veleanor or Magivel and that's out of three characters. Imagine OTP wars with hundreds of pairings like Touhou, Fate, Kancolle etc.
