Is the movie actually yuri or just subtext (at the most)?

^ Subtext at most, the movie focuses on the acceptance that people can't always stay together and they need to move on.
It's Hibike! tho, so you know their relationship is very much up to interpretation.

it's a really beautiful film, i thought there was something a little nettaigyo-ish about it.

There's one thing that bothers me in this picture... Why is Mizore the tachi?

because she's the more passionate of the two!

^Don't forget though, that Hibike Euphonium is yuri-bait. It actively pushes that subtext to make it feel ambiguous, but if you know the source material, you know that it doesn't matter. You can point at genuine chemistry and implied feelings all you want, but the author ultimately decides what's truly going on.
Now this movie is a case entirely different, but your generalization bugs me. Especially the unecessary comment about straight people not getting it. The subtext is obvious no matter what sexual orientation you are, but doubts are justified considering the context however.
