i honestly thought the watamote yuri insurgence had to have been between these two or tomoko's other friend when I first heard that there was "yuri", because she was one of the only other female characters at the time. little did I know that the manga introduced so many more characters, all of them questionably gay.

This is a lot harder to build a case for than anyone else, because the two of them are mortal frenemies.

I'm not sure there's attraction as much as Mokocchi can't figure out why Komisomething actually smells good.

This is bouncing off of the notorious ch. 15 of the spin-off "It's not my fault if my friend's not popular", about Tomoko and Yuu and Koto in middle school.

Man, those two have so much in common that they only aren't bestest of friends because Tomoko is an idiot.

I could kind of see Tomoko doing it just to screw with Komisomething's head tho. Their Sitcom Archnemesis clashes mostly stem from her getting bored after all...

Honestly, having a relationship grow between Tomoko and Komi-something wouldn't have been as crazy as it sounds. Yes, they tend to clash a lot, but we've seen that under all the vitriol they seem to have a weird sort of friendship where they're both fully aware of each other's entire personality. So it could possibly grow from there like it did with the other characters with little bits of comedy and serious character development sprinkled throughout.

To be fair though, the introduction of Yuri and Nemo was really for the better. They're like alternate universe versions of Tomoko. Nemo is the Tomoko who actually did good research in the whole "how to be popular" front and ended up lying her way to popularity. Yuri is Tomoko but without the eccentricities that make her interesting, both for the reader an in universe as we've seen people find Tomoko legitimately interesting.

There's actually at least three girls who to varying degrees reflect different aspects of Tomoko. Nemo is geeky but gregarious and doesn't share her asshole tendencies (still a troll though), Yuri is gruff and unsociable but not geeky or eccentric (and doesn't mind being bit of a loner), and "little fang bitch" Minami - who ironically never directly interacts with Kuro - is kind of like her mean and selfish streak turned up without the nerdy eccentricities and massive social anxiety. Also similarly prone to digging herself into holes hilarity ensuing.

^ You have a point about Minami. There's a purity to her vicious pettiness, malice, cruelty, and back-stabbing that really does reflect the worst aspect of Tomoko's personality. I think that's why she avoids and probably fears Tomoko, beside the fact that Tomoko has friends Minami doesn't want to cross and probably heard Tomoko's loud comment about her being a "little fanged girl."

I doubt Tomoko's existence much even registers to Minami; Hell if she recognizes Yuri exists she doesn't much show it, and that's despite de facto having to share Mako (whom she's genuine friends with and noticeably never nasty to) with her. (Yuri, conversely, loathes Minami.) Seems like she's self-centered enough that if you don't catch her (usually malicious) attention for some reason she's more likely than not to entirely ignore you... which, when you think about it, is not unlike how Kuro used to be too back in the day.

She's also thoughtless enough to have trash-talked Kuro and Nemo to Asuka and Okada of all people - see: digging yourself into holes - back during the amusement park arc so I don't think she's that much of a social tactician... part of the running gag with her seems to be that she can rival Kuro in lack of emotional intellect and outbreaks of Foot-Mouth Disease, she just arrives at it from a rather different direction for somewhat different reasons.

I know what you mean, but Tomoko definitely registers to Minami as a threat. A threat that is a threat because it can't be classified or predicted. Tomoko is "that girl" to Minami, both vague and present. That's my reading, anyway.

One thing for sure: Minami is the only character in the series completely devoid of worthwhile human qualities.

This would be as heartwarming a pair as Ron and Hermione, and for similar reasons.
