I honestly don't think you could of done something like this series 10 or 15 years ago, I think it's only possible because the audience as a whole have become more carried and open to more ideas and concepts.

Nope, there's barely even subtext, but they are very close friends and appear in nearly every single scene together. Perhaps someone on the animation team noticed because they're appearing together more and more often to the point where they're practically never apart lately.
Honestly, a lot of ships have set sail from much less and I ship it pretty hard anyway so I'm comfortable riding this all the way down like the Titanic if I have to.

It's not like the animation team pairs them up, that's literally how they are in the manga too.
But yeah it's less than subtext. There is more chemistry between Jiro and Kaminari than this.

@BugDevil how's Jirou unsocial? She's been getting along pretty much perfectly with everybody. She's the center of the music band, the girls' group seem to gravitate around her, she messes around with Kaminari and all. Hell, even back when she asked Midoriya for pointers, she was all casual about it.
Sure, she had trouble opening up about her music thing, but it was because she didn't though it was a hobby befitting for a hero, not because she's awkward or unsocial.
You might not wanna see the subtext, but there's no need to misread a character so badly

I guess you forgot how she was before the school festival. Kaminari is pretty much the only one she could act casual around. With everyone else she always acted awkward or withdrawn unless it's basic human interactions. The center of the girls group? Pfff. That's either Mina or Yaomomo, but certainly not Jiro.

@Bugpope Korea has a thing where instead of just February 14 (Valentine's) and March 14 (White Day) being a romantic holiday, every 14th of the year has some kind of event. June 14 is Kiss Day (and also the day that this comic was originally posted by the artist). The notable exception is April 14, which is Black Day. On this day, single people go out to eat black bean noodles and commiserate over their loneliness.
And Kiss Day is exactly what it sounds like - you celebrate the day by kissing your significant other. Companies use this opportunity to market lipstick and breath mints.
