Y’all, now that I think of it… Isn’t >Oiwa< supposed to he the woman with a disfigured face? I was reading the Yotsuya Kaidan after I searched for “Japanese ghost story of a woman with swollen eyes”.

My reasoning: Chapter 8 is out on MDex earlier and Okiku is telling the story of a woman revealing her swollen face to her lover (?) and it turning out to be the face of a certain dead woman. I couldn’t find the names mentioned by Okiku, so I decided to just search for japanese ghosts and disfigured faces. It seems like Oiwa’s the only story with such characteristics. When Okiku mentioned swollen face, I thought of the mysterious ghost showing up (“it’s her story, then! it’s not otsuyu!”). However, by the looks of it all, the author doesn’t seem to be following all the details of the ghost stories — the manga’s Oiwa does show up with a symbol in one of her eyes tho and her right side is usually covered, but the fact that there is another ghost with a f*cked up face and the description is that of a ghost most would assume it’s Oiwa, I am just… confused. Maybe the third ghost will be a completely invented story

I think someone pointed out on MDex, but it looks like this 3rd ghost is powerful enough to possibly be able to possess Okiku — another powerful ghost. The resentment doesn’t really feel as if comes from Okiku’s past — why would it? She just confessed, Ryou obviously loves her back and she knows… She’d be happy, fulfilled. The one who would be pissed after such statement and the possibility of them achieving happiness would be Otsuyu. Ryou is probably the reincarnation of someone related to the third ghost’s death and that’s why she took over Okiku and said all that. Specially because this happened right after Ryou thought of the possibility of she in fact reciprocating Okiku’s feelings — the third ghost answered with “I will not allow it”, the it being “you to be happy with a reciprocated love”

Also, if this ghost is truly powerful enough to take over Okiku, the fact that she’s been around all this time, could probably mean that the Chapter 3 jumpscare was another instance of her manifesting herself through another ghost.

Finally, Oiwa knew something would happen. She was probably at the door. And what she saw last chapter was probably this third ghost using Okiku to pose as a threat to Ryou.

I feel like the author is combining Okiku with Otusyu or mixing them in some way. I'm not sure how yet (a lot of possibilities) but the relationship between Okiku and the priestess has always closely resembled what you'd expect from an Otsuyu story. I don't think that's an accident.

True! And this chapter’s emphasis on the fact that Ryou could be falling in love with a ghost… next thing you know they’ll be having s*x and then this will just be a modern version of Otsuyu’s tale.

Y'know I am re-reading the manga nd this sequence in chapter 10 made me realize something: never mind not being able to read people and being void of feelings, Komachi's straight up evil.
Look at that face.

Also her eyes on page 6 after Satsuki rejects the idea of "stoping to lie about people dying", they are evil eyes, and empty even. Right after that, she just shifts. Could she be the actual devil? She has been plotting something from the start, I thought that at first she was oblivious, but in light of the latest chapter's last page and how Komachi going to the place Itou almost died is framed as important, taking a look at all previous instances where she were creepy made me realize that she might indeed have bad intentions when doing everything she does.

She now doesn't strike me as dangerously unaware anymore but as a very calculating character from the very start.

I think Komachi is a person that believes the life and death of someone should never be tempered with, so its like

Satsuki - Wants to save everyone she can
Komachi - Believes life and death is a set in stone destiny so later on she might kill everyone who had a near death experience but was saved by Satsuki, she kills them to make them "fulfill their destiny"

I agree. Given how Komachi's character has been built so far, she seems to be ok with doing anything, even wrong things, for the sake of "helping". What if she catches up into the "the deaths will continue until they are fulfilled" logic of whatever force they are dealing with and thinks killing herself and her classmates would help them, by not putting them in danger anymore.
Although she doesn't strike as a person who would come to this conclusion out of a sense of duty because she rarely thinks for herself, apparently never doing what she wants to do and going along with whatever other want even if it is absurd. She might misinterpret like when she taught Satsuki wanted to die, she even realized she was wrong (no signs of remorse tho), but had she really killed Satsuki at that moment it would be because "it was what she wanted" and not out of Komachi's personal wishes. With that said, she might as well be what triggers all the deaths at once because someone told her to do it — perhaps the damn president — not because she herself came to that conclusion, but because "it's what they wanted", even if it meant having herself killed. Maybe it would be with a bomb (?), but it's really hard to make out what would cause so much blood to splash with no signs of other things breaking on that "future" scene.

Also, on the last page Komachi is either thinking “poor Bug-kun he just wanted to kill” or is starting to realise that Satsuki knowing this would happen to Itou is suspicious.
Idk what would happen if she found out about Satsuki actually seeing corpses. Up until now she went along with everything but it doesn’t seem like she’s as aware of the supernatural aspect of it as the other girls are.

Either way, she looks pretty here and I hate it. This little sociopath gremlin shouldn’t look this hot.

Imma be real, chief. I only noticed it while re-reading since it’s been a year. I remember people pointing there was a “creepy ghost at the window” in one of two chapters, but to find out she’s been there THIS WHOLE TIME, even in flashbacks, is disturbing — and tells us the author is definitely planning something.

If it's Otsuyu, she does have backstory. And if she's somehow connected to the childhood friend (not at all a sure thing), that friend's affection might be dangerous. I assume the friend is caught up with something, even if it's not Otsuyu.

I mean, it might not be 100% confirmed, but her shadow being the ghost at the end of chapter 5 (present days) and her reflection back then being right in front of the ghost, Meguru is either guilty from the start or became a target that surely will be used by the third ghost the moment she got close to Ryou.

Also, please tell us the backstory, idk if the sources I found where correct.

Wikipedia straight up says

“Botan Dōrō (牡丹燈籠, The Peony Lantern) is a Japanese ghost story (kaidan) and one of the most famous kaidan in Japan. The plot involves sex with the dead and the consequences of loving a ghost.”

and damn that synopsis is TOO connected to the MCs (if this is the story in question, then what happens with the protagonists will probably be a parallel somehow??)

With that face I am sure she ain’t seeing no panties, she saw something terrible go down. One of them will be severely injured, and something tells me this third ghost who’s been watching Ryou for some time already is definitely connected to the high school friend (almost lover), if this shadow means anything (it lowkey looks like Meguru is possessed by her), or at least will be.

By the way, here are the instances she showed up, which is on every other chapter:
- Chapter 1 looking at the gays. Is she angry or is it just that her face is covered?

• Chapter 2, as the horny police on the first panel

• Chapter 3 inside of Ryou's body. The reflection of the creepy ghost is INSIDE. OF. HER. CONSCIOUSNESS.

• Official (?) introduction (?) on Chapter 4

• Chapter 5 flashback RIGHT in front of what should be Meguru’s reflection !!!

The shadow on the last page could also be her, but after revising this post I noticed that the hair length seems much shorter than of the ghost haunting every chapter of the manga. It looks to be the same as Meguru's, so it could just be a random evil spirit, but it could just be the fact is a shadow and how sometimes people with long here seen up front could look like they have shorter hair when it's pushed back.

• Extra Chapter, bottom left panel looking at the lewd with an “is that allowed?” face (it’s always the same face, actually)

• Chapter 6 has the three ghosts on the top right panel

Also, on page 22, the hypothetical scenario of the third ghost visiting the MC looks a lot like the shadow behind the high school friend. The same eyes and creepy smile.

Since it’s been like a year and i don’t care if i already said it or not, I also want to point out that maybe this ghost is somehow related to Okiku’s special person from her past, who obviously is connected to Ryou, if the physical similarities indicate that.

This person could be the wife or maybe daughter of Okiku’s boss (master?) who had her killed, hence this jumpscare, indicating Ryou and whoever betrayed Okiku while alive have a link.

What if the ghost IS the woman in question and all her surprised Pikachu faces are jealousy? Since obviously Okiku and her past love are a case of star-crossed lovers. And the ghost is said to have been heartbroken and anguished (maybe having regretted whatever mistake she made or becoming too burdened after Okiku’s tragic death that before her death she was harbouring strong feelings of regret — even if she wasn’t guilty and Okiku’s “I will never forgive you” is misplaced grudge)
Maybe jealousy could be the reason she approaches Ryou, who might be a descendant or something for her to be watching over for so long and never attacking, even when she was “weaker” (before training). But that seems like a reach since the girl Okiku loved has blonde hair while the ghost has black.

Calling it now, Lily totally knows the new Kaoru is a woman and is perfectly okay with it.

She should have noticed by the clothes, I think. But it's not too much of a reach to think at this moment she's in denial and ignoring the differences she might feel (hand size, different attire, voice, previously long hair, boobs?, is shorter than Kaoru). And her getting out of this denial will be as dramatic as Hana deciding to become her brother.

But she will definitely be ok eventually. Hana's motives are as noble as they are tragic, and she's bound to fall in love with this shorter, high-pitched voiced Kaoru. Maybe Hana will have to eventually fake herself coming to visit her brother and Lily will start seeing the girl as a good friend — getting to know the real her, having a conversation not smudged by lies, just talking to Kaoru's little sister (with only the omission of a trick being played and this being the same person to begin with).

Anyways, I am usually a wuss who doesn't go for drama, but this is a PERIOD Drama so I am all for it. Can't stand the idea of waiting until June for a 2nd chapter.

I say fuck it and make it a triad. Or just give Natori two girlfriends who are ok with sharing. She has two hands!!

Also once Lapis gives up on the “all commoners are sh*t” bs her friendship with Diana can turn into something truly genuine, the powerful commoner even helping if there truly is a coup-d’état threatening the lives of nobility (she’s a dependable knight, y’know) — class issues don’t need to end in bloodshed.

Or make the villainess and heroine a bit gay for each other, as a treat.
