This was Yuni-sensei's first original doujin yuri comic released at COMITIA, 10 years ago today!

As mentioned in the author's notes at the end, there was an earlier draft of this released at GLFes in 2013. There's no digital version I could find, but from the announcement on Pixiv (https://www.pixiv.net/en/artworks/35849399), it looks like it covered the same main story beats.

There must be some rule that historical yuri can only have bitter-sweet endings.

There isn’t a specific rule, but there was a common trope in yuri literature, maybe around the 1960s in Japan, where yuri stories often had to end tragically. Authors weren’t allowed, or at least weren’t encouraged, to write openly queer happy endings. My information is a bit fuzzy, but I remember watching a few video essays and reading some articles about it. If I find them, I’ll link them. :)

Aside from Shimura and Takako’s yuri manga Sweet Blue Flowers back in 2009, it looks like another one of her works will get an anime adaptation. Scenes from Awajima is set to receive an anime next spring. How lovely :) I remember reading this manga a few years ago, and I think turning it into an anime will make it even more beautiful.
