I feel that the atmosphere of the series has changed. If this is going to be a long running series then the author will undoubtably result to further dramafication (tasteful or not), in order to keep the series interesting.
I don't see the point in this chapter, other than to give us a glimpse of what's next. Higashiyama will follow the generic tropes of the "genre".

I suppose having any kind of drama at all is a bad thing?

Forced drama? The deal about Keiko's past has been teased for quite a long time and we're already over 20 chapters, i don't see anything being shoved down my throat here
Although i do think it would be best if it didn't come out of nowhere and there was a chapter before it to warm us to this one, felt a little like exposition while until now it was a pretty subtle subject

Yeah seriously, i find cliches that knows what they are doing quite more enjoyable than stories trying to be original but not doing very well, not that being on the safe side is something worth a compliment, but i've seen enough shonen to know that sometimes the simple stuff, when done well, are the best stuff

Art (drawings, shapes, anatomy, etc) alone is actually decent (for the most part, gets a bit dodgy at points), but the lack of shading/shadows makes everything look too solid, flat, and static... Which is not only boring but a bit of a pain to look at.

Good shading and shadows can give a soft look and shapes e.g. on thighs for softness, and on the face for shapes (shadow that shows nose and lips shape). Also for textures on clothing and other objects. Even if it is for minimalistic details it works very well, like Tokoharu's stuff http://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/evening_rain or the recently uploaded http://dynasty-scans.com/chapters/hiyori_geta
