Good to get a confirmation that she was just messing with her to get her interested because I was really calling bs when she tried to say that she mistook a marble for a candy.

cis-normative

My god, the political correctness pains me.

Ain't nobody so easily triggered as people who complain about political correctness. =P

I love Tamamusi, one of the best reliable adult life yuri authors out there

A little cis-normative but hey they're kids and figuring things out still so w/e it was cute.

edit: Yikes the drama on this one!! Backreading that was a blast wow.

Yeah the author wrote this with a fairly cis-normative lens but let's not attack the characters people! They are how old, like 14, 15? A tad too young to blame for those imperfections don't you think?

Virgins' Empire is basically a "virgin" form of Maka-Maka, with more characters.

Oh hell yes. I've never clicked "subscribe" so quickly before in my life.

also transbikes I think you're maybe being a little overly-cynical... The girl has a walking stick and a radio. Already way more realistic than most stories. I don't think the artist is using her disability as a throwaway gag or anything.

I am cynical, its true. I'm not saying the depiction was inaccurate, it's just there is extensive history of ablesist narratives that treat disability as simply a tool to further plot and highlight character development. Disability is often cured by the end of the story to show that the characters overcame whatever hurdles they had to navigate in the story. Its always framed as something bad, something undesirable, and for the able-bodied audience to pity. So when the cure happens, the able-bodied audience can be happy, knowing that the character is now "just like them". It undermines the reality that most disabled people manage their disability for life, and it erases an ideas that people can be perfectly happy with a disability. It destroys disabled culture and enforces the idea that able-bodied bodies are inherently better and more desirable.

I am old and full of salt, I apologize.
I'm still going to read this though, because its still a story with disability and that's already rare as it is...

edit: see post above this for an example of exactly what I'm expecting..

Huh, confirmed dating in the series. That's nice since it was all just heavy implications beforehand. Too bad it was a super emotionally manipulative relationship, but hey we all but in name have Asami x Ichinose now in addition to Chie x Ai!

Okay let's open the floor for bets on whether she will be cured of her blindness by the end.... i'm happy to see disabled representation but this story seems a sure shot for the cliched "let's use disability as a prop to frame a story!!!" Won't it be so happy when she can see again and still doesn't reject her???"

Also, for people complaining about Marika entering the crossdressing competition:

1) I feel you, she's not crossdressing and it sucks to see her treat herself like that.
BUT
2) Internalized transmisogyny is a bitch. It never really goes away. Sure there are days where you totally own your identity, but oftentimes that awful voice in your head rears up to repeatedly ask: who are you kidding? you're not really a girl, you can never fully be one, you'll never be good enough/pass enough and etc etc. And it can easily lead to misgendering yourself and other actions like Marika showed in that chapter. Also, she's still young, and she's still so full of doubt and insecurities. And the author did a pretty good job to make a point of that.

An aside:
I would have liked one of Marika's friends to call her out on her misgendering, but I'm guessing the author felt like she needed that scene to drive the "we're all deviants" message. Which I kind of have mixed feelings about. I think I like it, but only because it was Tamura who said it. Specifically because he went through so much growth getting over his self-imposed "deviant" related issues. With him saying it, it read more like a reclaimation of the word deviant used as a source of community and support, rather than an isolating word.

Its so rare to see media with girls supporting and caring about each other (especially in non-romantic text), and with chapters like this, this manga is quickly becoming one of my favorites. Its literally a manga of just gals being pals. Its wonderful.

What a shame because this had the potential to be pretty cute, and seeing that it was Amano got my hopes up a little. But hey, I guess its too much to ask for fat characters that are, you know, actual characters.

That story about the cat and dog was deep. Wow. It was even better than that story from Yuri Kuma Arashi anime.

I'm guessing this is sarcasm ...? this was just a simple metaphor for gay marriage in japan so. I'm assuming your taking a dig at yuri kuma, which is fair

No. I was serious. That simple metaphor in this chapter was better than the whole bears incident in YKA anime. Simple and clear. Ikuni should learn form Charie.

Hard to argue that lol. I hate that mindset that now thinks that more complicated/complex a metaphor is the more respectable it is? No matter how much the story, since in the end that's EXACTLY WTF IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE, suffers. It's really just not necessary or all that clever lol. That series was just a mess before they even got to the fourth episode lol.

It really was. The thing is Ikuhara Kunihiko had done so well with fairly complex metaphors in earlier work (mawaru penguindrum/utena) but it was just so ham-fisted in yuri kuma and obvious that he was, as you were saying, trying to make a very simple metaphor into something overly complicated & it completely fell on its face.

So the story is basically like an autobiography?
Also perhaps the "not yaoi" tag is suitable too. They are both biologically males but heck, it's still a het style relationship

The "biologically male" phrase is so gross. Particularly in light of how it's mostly used as a weapon against trans folks, such as those frankly evil bathroom bills in the US (and an attempt in Canada too).

that shit is so scary...
