It's not. It fucking isn't. The abuse survivor just give up because she feels powerless or she's not ready to fight＊. There's no win-win in abusive relationship, it's either zero-sum (abuser got what they wanted) or lose-lose (one or more end up in grave or was seriously hurt, and the other, if exist, end up behind bars).

＊Abuse hotline/help center saw this kind of cases frequently, they help victims by giving them the help the victims asked for (like, in heterosexual relationship's case, birth control medications), a place to seek help (abusers tend to isolate victims from their social graph because that makes victims feel powerless and nowhere to go to seek help) and not being a judgemental ass.

Also it is cheating if you didn't communicate with your partner clearly before bringing other love/sex interests into your house. polyamory/monogamy is no excuse. (Honestly that's probably why poly people are seen as cheaters by many people)

Though I don't know how Mao thought of their relationship, either. She might even only thought of Hikaru as one of her sex friends, not even some serious romantic relationship.
