There are a lot of possible reasons for why this doujin was created. Maybe the author's just trying to cash in on male gaze. Maybe they want to create deeper yuri stories, but aren't confident in their ability to do so and want to try something shallow to test the waters.

I'd give the author a chance to build an actual oeuvre before trying to read into their motivations.

For now, I'll argue that if this author were going for the former, they could have just made one of the characters a completely featureless, male, wish fulfillment vehicle.

Not any movie in particular. Smoking in bed is a common convention in media (American in my experience, but it may or may not apply in other cultures) frequently used to convey to the audience that sex has occurred without explicitly showing the act taking place.

The act of smoking tends to imply the smoker is sexually experienced, which is then contrasted with the inexperience of their partner, as demonstrated in the above image.

When a scanlator picks up a project for free, they do so because they have at least some inherent interest in the subject. So there's an implicit guarantee of effort being put into the work.

Having interest and putting forth effort doesn't necessarily mean the scanlator has the ability to produce good work. They may like the subject, but they may or may not have the skills, resources, and/or experience to do it justice.

Luckily, not every romance story is supposed to be a relationship manual.

The people pointing it out aren't complaining. Most of us enjoy reading into it for what it is.

It's just a little disconcerting when we see other readers brush aside all of the intricacies and complications of the relationship and declare "It's ok because yuri."

It's not ok. And that's the entire point of the story.

Depends. If a viewer is coming from the anime and hasn't read any of the manga (which sounds like a fair number of commenters here), then it's easy to see them objecting to this. Kobayashi had far less creative control in the former, which in turn is far less overt in its sexual content than the source material.

Having seen both, I much prefer non-sexual Kanna x Saikawa to a sexual one. But lolicons gonna lolicon.
