The only thing that puzzles me is what Tomoko told Shizuku. Surely, she didn't say something cold like "You did your best, but your best wasn't good enough." I wonder whether she meant something like "You did your best, but sometimes doing your best is just not enough." My Japanese is nonexistent.

(Technically, Tomoko wasn't shaving. She was trying to use some big scissors she got somewhere.) Tomoko had gotten some good long looks in at the other girls when they were at the bath. This included Nemo, which led to an extremely painful encounter much later on.

^^ It's a brilliant anime, whether or not there is enough of these two. The depth of their relationship is all very powerful but cryptic suggestion, and it's both poignant and puzzling at the end. They are very beautiful together. Some of us didn't "get it", but a lot of others did. In other words, you won't regret it and I highly recommend it.

It was ch. 24 of the manga. A girl behind her had a naginata that violated Tomoko, who thought it was something else. Naginatas are kind of hooked at the end.
