Hmm, this chapter reminded me of the one-shot Battan did recently, "Memories of Rouge," or at least the second main character in it. SPOILER!!! That character later mentions how she "loves all kinds of people" and this is her justification for cheating. I feel like the editor in this series is similar, she picks up on these mangaka because she finds them interesting and fascinating, but slowly loses interest once her curiosity has been satisfied.

I've always understood Battan as someone who writes lesbian relationships in a way that includes a lot of elements of difficulties of society and expectations, exploring love and what it means to be in love, which part of those narratives and her exploration of them includes relationships with men. To me Yuri is an umbrella term for lesbian relationships, and series such as "Run Away With Me, Girl" is also Yuri for that reason. Yuri can be a whole variety of experiences and exploration, and I'm usually interested to see all the ways authors explore themes in their own ways. I enjoy some realistic angst, dramatic angst, realistic fluff, fantastical fluff, so on and so forth. I think a wide range of authors that cover all different kinds of narratives is part of what I enjoy about Yuri.

That's a really great viewpoint! Personally, I feel the same way about Amano Shuninta. Some of her works explore playful lesbian relationships, while others highlight the diversity of relationships and don’t always sugarcoat things. There’s a certain rawness in some of her stories, rather than ending with a happy relationship, the characters find peace of mind and a deeper understanding of themselves, like in The Feelings We All Must Endure.

I also really liked your point about yuri being an umbrella term. I've come across quite a few people who say they don’t want to read yuri because they think it’s too "girly" or too cute. That’s such a closed-minded narrative as if just because it’s a romance between women, it has to be mostly cute. It really shows how reductive some people’s views on yuri are. I love how diverse it actually is.

I feel like the hang-up on Bocchi not being Kita's first is less a "purity" thing, and more that Bocchi is incredibly insecure in their current relationship. The two are obviously friends with benefits, but I get the feeling Bocchi wants them to be more. Her lack of self-esteem holds her back from expressing her true feelings, instead relying on their current physical relationship to eek out any amount of romantic satisfaction she can. The hang-up on Kita having slept with others is Bocchi projecting the notion that maybe, had she been Kita's first, they'd have that extra special connection. Plus there's the worry that this relationship really isn't special in any way, and that any attempt to close the gap could leave Bocchi as just another previous partner.

I do get why people get icked about it, but I just don't feel like it's what the author was implying here.

I think that's a good interpretation of the story as well. Which the point still stands, they need to communicate before whatever they have is reduced to regrets. Plus one way or another there's definitely a feeling of unease here, where I hope they work things out and can find a way to be happier together.

I find it interesting how works like this can take on deeper layers of meaning, even if the author didn’t intend them. As readers, we often find ways to interpret the work and search for our own answers. That said, from what I’ve read, Orihi Chihiro’s writing always seems to carry a naturally gloomy atmosphere. There’s something about their style, a kind of quietness, that creates that feeling. So even if the author didn’t deliberately intend it, the tone emerges naturally through their writing.

I kinda dislike that Bocchi is hung up about the implication that kita-san wasn't a virgin when they started smashing. To be fair, its totally in character for Bocchi to be insecure about it but I wish they resolved it instead of leaving it with a downer feeling.

Same, I generally dislike the whole idea that if your partner isn't a virgin they have less value. Love your partner for who they are, virgin or not virgin.

To be honest, this one-shot felt more like they were friends with benefits, and their friendship seemed a bit rocky. Especially with how Bocchi mentioned they'd passed by the store many times, it gave the impression that there wasn’t much genuine connection or chemistry between them, other than sex. Maybe it’s just me, but it also felt a little possessive. Like when Ikuyo says, “Your first will always be me,” and Bocchi replies in her head, “If only I could have been your first too.” I guess that’s why it felt kind of gloomy to me, but again, that might just be my perspective (and this is only a 16 page oneshot).

oh I remember seeing this art work before, on chapter 6! In the original version of the painting, one strap of the woman’s black gown was slipping off her shoulder, which was considered highly improper at the time, particularly for a woman of her social standing. When it was exhibited the reaction was negative. Critics and the public found it not explicitly indecent, but provocative enough to be seen as vulgar, causing significant controversy.

Interesting manga with a side of tears (on my part)
I think this is a lovely coming-of-age manga, something that resonates with people as they transition into adulthood. It reminds readers not to take things for granted. While the story has its sad moments, it also captures the carefree spirit of youth, like kids having a random conversation about seeing the number 22 multiple times a day. All in all, it's a nice bittersweet story.
