I dig that development. It's the good kind of bad

Really well drawn but this first chapter was basically a collage of clichés with no real direction, I just read it and can't even remember the name of the protagonist. The good, I guess, is that it should be easier to have it improve than to make it worse. I mean, even a simple thing like giving the characters clear motives would go a long way, the few things you can learn about those two in this chapter are all terribly tropey.

I wonder how they didn't notice her eyes are so high that her eyebrows are almost meeting her hairline

Omichi is cute, but I felt this payoff was rather weak. Also, I dont know why, but Hino felt a little bit out of character.

*well actually I've read the first few chapters as they were coming out, but it made me too uncomfortable so I haven't touched it since.

What made you change your mind about reading it again? I'm genuinely curious.

@Alexrain
I just noticed you asked me this two months ago, sorry. I think the reason is that there's a certain shock factor when you're reading it for the first time, but having had many months to get used to the fact that this manga is a thing kinda allows me to read it in a more "detached" manner (i.e. not stopping to think about how things are messed up, and certainly not putting myself in any of the character's shoes).

so I wonder how long people will keep complaining about it.

The misunderstanding ? Till it's reveal. Like i said there is no point of having the misundertsanding when Ooguma doesn't care about Kenda's gender to begin with. The whole thing was broken as soon as this point was out of the way, the gag is forced for seemingly no reason. Kanda just repeating to herqself she is a girl and being embarrased that Ooguma found out she is a girl is not very laughable to me because there is no reason for it to happen. Just because it's comedy doesn't mean it can't be bad. I mean, good for you if you find it funny but you can't deny it's stupid at this point.

It just seems you want the story to be about something it's not. It's clearly about silly worries and misunderstandings. Also, just because Ooguma would be ok with a girl, it's not reasonable to think Kanda revealing to be one after all of this would be no big deal. I'm not a fan of drawn out misunderstandings myself, but it's only been 4 chapters that, frankly, aren't that long. "Undeniably stupid" is still very debatable at this point, no matter how angry you are about it.

I saw chapter 12, decided it was finally time to give this series a try and here I am, left with the worst cliffhanger possible.

So cute!
Although the artist seems to be bad at drawing the characters facing each other. Ch09 looks like a visual novel at the end.

I hated the "I stan that" translation as well. Too lazy to Google it right now to double-fact-check but for those unaware (and I know there's at least a few of you) "stan" is slang for being an obsessive fan of something, or someone who is an obsessive fan of something. Came from an Eminem song or something.

clearly the slang doesn't have that meaning anymore or something? Came from an Eminem song but the current generation found another use for the expression or something. It used to be solely about obsessive stalker fans, but now every fandom that has young people uses it to talk about their idols.

I think the translation was great.

[...]
it'd be interesting if it explored what steps Akira would have to take, and the medical treatment options for transgender youth in Japan, it does cover some issues, but mostly in terms of the parents' reaction.

Yeah, that would make for a much more compelling read.

Didn't think it'd end so soon :/

Of course! for example here's the first 5 minutes of Fragtime https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-m-tWZl77A
And yuru yuri omuro ke is coming back soon and translated!
Also what doesn't happen in the story the fans will do it in doujins and fanart... Well, idk about making ikenai Otona fanart but well, there's a lot out there of everything else xP

You're a good person.

When you read this series at one go, the pacing is not that bad. I think it’s the drip-drip-drip of the serialization (coupled with all the nesting flashbacks and the specials) that makes it seem so interminable.

You're right. I've pretty much started reading this for the first time* today and just finished the 14 chapters currently available. The pacing felt really normal

90k yen for 3 bedrooms is less than my 405 sq ft. studio by almost half. Guess that solidfies this manga as fiction.

Damn imperial units. For a moment I got really confused thinking you were living in a huge ass apartment four times the size of my family's.That would be cheap for <180k yen.

When I see these teens, teachers and parents giving out life changing advice as if they were professionals and had everything figured out after meeting Akira or Hime about twice, it makes me want to scream.

These people need therapists. Not to "cure" them, but to allow them to understand themselves better. It's a real job, ffs,not something you do between class and a teashop.

It's definitely simplistic and not great storytelling, but is it really that upsetting? Kabi Nagata described experiencing some pivotal changes just from simple exchanges with random people, like when a stranger encouraged her to follow her dream of being a mangaka, and that was a real story and she was suffering from crippling depression.

Besides, I've never really seen a realistic depiction of therapy in manga or comics in general (the only exception being in Alison Bechdel's work.)

Not that there's anything wrong with your opinion, it's an interesting criticism that I'd like to understand better. Maybe it's just an issue of taste.

If you're into women or men, then obviously you'd be a rapist.

lol you people like blowing things out of proportion. My point was that loli eroge doesn't exist in a vacuum. It really doesn't, no matter how much one wants it to.

I'm not saying it automatically makes anyone a pedophile, but to like it a person at the very least has to have a stance on eroticised depictions of children that a lot of people are not okat with.

Believe it or not, my intention here was not to judge, I just hated the inital fifa argument.

Who in their sane mind leaves a little kid with a woman who owns games about raping and confining little kids?

You know that playing Fifa doesn't make you a footballer neither playing CoD or Battlefield make you a soldier right ?

Well if you like Fifa you're probably into soccer or sports, if you like CoD you're probably into guns, war history or action movies. If you like loli eroge, you're into...........

As an aside note, why are there like, no light hearted trans manga? They're all dramas, or even super angsty. There aren't really any about someone discovering their identity from scratch, either.

I'd love to see that.
Maybe it has to do with how our current society's treatment of trans people and questions regarding gender creates this climate where a lot of trans people find themselves only able to feel validated through their pain (see transmedicalism).

I've worked recently with an amazing artist who's a trans man, and he said that, being a trans person, it's like society doesn't allow him to talk, as an artist and as a thinker, about anything other than his pain of being trans. He sometimes wishes he could just talk about mathematics and outer space, but everytime he tries, things just get worse.

I don't think that's the literal definition of melodrama. Sure there's melodrama the casual insult, but there's also melodrama the genre, which is a term without qualitative charge and can combine just fine with the word "good". Both senses might fit Liberty for my mileage, but only the latter fits Sasameki Koto.

If you don't consider exaggerated drama as a bad thing then that's fine, I am not here to judge your tastes, but a meoldrama is by definition unrealistically overdramatic.

Since you seem to like links
https://www.britannica.com/art/melodrama

this is what the previous user was referring to

It is indeed by definition unrealistic and dramatic, but you were the one who initially framed melodrama as a sort of drama with shortcomings (for being too exaggerated). Sure it can be that sometimes, but the term also refers to a genre that has been object of many studies and also includes some outstanding works, such as the films by Pedro Almodovar. It's possible to be melodramatic with purpose.

It's great that you've pointed that out. A lot of people misunderstand that.
