"I clicked on the manga titled Gross Girl With Problems, and the girl it's about is kinda gross and has problems :/ Don't know why the author would have a character with problems, but guess I don't need to waste my time here."

I feel like I should at least offer some defense of the people reading the story and feeling disappointed; after all, this isn't the only story on the site dedicated to exploring taboo sexuality. Something like "is my hobby weird" is certainly focused on a character with a specific fetish but the main characters are, broadly, able to relate to each other even if some of their behavior would be regarded as creepy in the real world.

Usui Shio's other works are about people who are struggling to navigate through the ways in which they can't match or don't value societal expectations, and are focused on characters trying to establish a relationship between the two of themselves and developing an understanding of each other -- and basically always trying to understand each other. Characters may not always get along, but they do want to be with each other and work to maintain that.

This story is a bit different not because the subject matter requires a different approach -- I'd say that the other stories negotiate their relationship in basically the same way as kink requires. While it might seem odd to some people to think of such a relationship as "kink", while the term isn't particularly rigorous, it does suggest a sexuality outside of the mainstream, and you could make a case for it qualifying in that respect.

So I think it's easy to see the way in which these main characters are actually maladjusted rather than just possessing some kinks and be turned off. These characters aren't terribly likeable as they exist right now. Given the author's other works, I don't think they'll stay quite as closed-off and self-absorved as they are right now, but if they did there wouldn't be much room to tell a story anyway.

Still, I've absolutely been turned off from a story because I found the immaturity of the characters infuriating, and if I didn't expect the characters to develop then I probably wouldn't continue reading. I will grant the author the benefit of the doubt based on the strength of the previous works.

I don't get the connection between the two.

Both this MC and Asumi are obsessed with some lost childhood friend. Asumi has even passed up on what could be a rather nice relationship with Nanao, to continue burning money on a quixotic quest for Mai.

OTOH, Asumi is cuter. And seems happier (she's having fun) and better adjusted in life, quest notwithstanding. And doesn't go into scary rants. So she's easier for readers to like.

So basically the only thing in common is they've been separated from a childhood friend? That's not much in common. The MC from this isn't even looking for Meguru like Asumi is looking for Mai.

I mean there's a very obvious difference in the fact that while Asumi wants to reconnect, Mai doesn't have any hangups about sex and Asumi certainly isn't at all possessive of Mai (or reasonably could be, the way the story's set up)

Love it when fanworks find a way to develop Nina's pain-in-the-ass nature in novel but consistent ways.

Loving this so far. Two deranged people who just so happen to have compatible derangement is a good trope.

It doesn't seem that compatible to me, not like this at least

Really sucks to be Yuki. Saw Yuni kissing Fuuko before and knows she is cheating, probably has some unrequited feelings for Nanase, and when she finally tries to hint at the cheating in her meek manner, Nanase is slamming her into walls.

It hurts my soul how this girl is being punished for doing the right thing...

I hope we find out in a couple chapters that Yuki actually enjoyed that and wants Nanase to do that again.

I feel like I should like this, but for some reason I just can’t bring myself to. I’m no prude; the humor should be in my wheelhouse. But I just don’t find this shit funny.

Maybe it’s cuz the mom is so goddamn annoying. She just screams “Rape! My daughter is scary and gonna rape me!” over and over and over again. It’s literally the only “punchline” and it’s repeated ad nauseam. And it also just feels so mean spirited towards the daughter. Sure, it would be surprising to discover that a family member of yours had a fetish for incest porn that mirrors their relationship with you. But screaming and treating them like a rapist when they haven’t even done anything is not the right way to handle it, especially if they’re young and still probably working their way through their sexuality.

I know I’m probably taking this too seriously and this is supposed to be played for laughs. But because I can’t see it as a comedy since I just don’t find it funny, I guess I can’t help looking at it a bit more seriously, which really makes it an annoying read.

Idk, just an alternate opinion on this. I’ve been seeing so much overwhelming praise for this that I was starting to wonder if I was the only one who didn’t find it that funny and absolutely fucking hated the mom lol

It's not that deep.

What the fuck are you talking about. That is the entire joke

For me the problem is that this was a story that set up all its elements as something more along the lines of psych / psych-horror or suspense, and this last chapter tried to resolve it as, for some reason, a bog-standard romance. Gives the story about all the coherence of the whipped cream on top of a hamburger.

I feel like many works that try hard to stuff a lot of controversial topics into their story tend to not do a great job of juggling them and wind up with a whole that's much less than the sum of their parts. It's probably too early to say that definitively for this one, but I'm not seeing a lot of promise so far.

Ah good, finally getting into love pentagram territory. If this story doesn't end with a relationship chart that looks like it was patterned after a spiderweb made by a spider tripping on lsd then I demand my money back

"Like" definitely isn't a strong enough word for how these two feel about each other.

These two look love such good friends

There we go. Fixed it.

Yea i dunno im not a huge fan of the short-haired girl. I get they were going for the cute kinda possessive but her actively sabotaging her friends social life is too toxic for my taste.

Yeah, seems pretty dysfunctional.
The short-haired one has this weird "I refuse to define myself as more than a friend even though I'm obviously obsessed with this girl, so the only way I can be exceptional is to make sure she has no other friends" thing going.

seems like she's the one more in line with the jirai-kei archetype -- which is probably related to why she had those clothes to give away in the first place

Honestly, I feel like this can only realistically end in one of them stabbing the other and I'm not even sure who would be holding the knife at this point. Wakaba should just fucking walk, tbh.

I'd be up for that. Not nearly enough knife play stories on here

I like how Jun is always down to go along with Nadeshiko's lewd suggestions. They would probably get along pretty well if they weren't "rivals"

Honestly this is why I think a poly end isn't at least inconsistent with the characterizations; Jun is interested and Nadeshiko is very happy to bring more people (Jun) in for fun.
