In Mongolian it means "curse", in Greek it means "Joy" and in Sanskrit it is the name of a supernatural being.
Our Khara is almost certainly named after the later.
Also, in India itself, Khara is more common as a surname than a given name and usually indicates Punjabi heritage.

both my brother and aunt being teachers I can confidently say that he would get in so much trouble for saying that to a student.
