Well, the way I see it, the manager clearly likes her back but she is constantly thinking about work due to the fact that all the scenes we see about them are in 'the workplace' or the night before having to work, and she has to restrain in order to be responsible for both of them (as 'model-chan' obviously isn't).

This is my reading of the matter as well. Yuria can be a bit childish so the manager has to act mature enough for both of them sometimes. Between that and wanting to keep their relationship private (for several reasons not least of which is because idols have to be ~pure~ or whatever), I can see why she'd be at arm's length in public. Even so my reading of the series is that Ookabe is madly filled with passion for her

Yeah, sorry, it's just that suddenly the apparently 2nd-tier protagonist in love with the younger odd genius got involved in physics talk. When that happened in Qualia the Purple, all hell broke loose. If you don't know Qualia, BELIEVE ME, we do NOT want this series going in that direction. Not with little Yuzumori-san.

Given what Hyper Girls Battle Orgia was like, I could almost see it happening. But I don't think it's quite that kind of story.

I am also correct in modern times. As I mentioned before, you'd be very hard-pressed to find a modern reference that doesn't use third-person singular "they" in cases where the gender is unknown. Which is absolutely the case here.

It doesn't matter if they adopted "they" relatively recently because we live in the current time, not the 19th century when there was a movement to use the generic "he" instead. It is totally acceptable in 2017 to use a singular, third-person "they". Which was, you will note, the issue in the first place.

Plus, when it comes to dialogue in fiction being understandable to an English-speaking audience is what matters and as mentioned before, people know what it means, therefore it's acceptable to use.

I'll take any excuse to repost this dinosaur comics classic

Put me firmly in the crowd that would always assume that the sort of, uh, tutor, who would so brazenly lie about their credentials in order to persue a sexual relationship would not actually be a suitable romantic partner.

Tamamusi's stories don't tend to sacrifice themselves on the altar of ~realism~ exactly but they definitely try to capture honest human interactions that tend to fall by the wayside in service of common storytelling tropes*. See also: the yuri otaku girl stories.

(* Which, I mean, you're looking for your big break in the industry someone tells you "We want you to write a 10-page oneshot about two girls in love, also your deadline is in two weeks" and you're probably not going to want to try to revolutionize the field, yknow?)

I was extremely confused because this is like the first time she hasn't been illustrated in the grotesque exaggerated style so I barely even recognized her.

In any case I think it's interesting if she's getting a deeper characterization because she's probably my favorite character.
