I never figured out what the the thing on her neck was. Just a scar? Or is it a hole in her throat? I guess a scar since her head's not sagging forward, which it would if all of that was a hole.

There was a comment somewhere on the first page about how this could be a metaphor for dementia/alzheimer's. Dementia does get explicitly mentioned in chapter 12, so probably that's part of it. The more obvious topic it's tackling is grief and death, as most zombie stories do. In this case love that transcends tragic death. The love demonstrated throughout was palpable. Well, it could easily be argued its a twisted sort of love, but I'll say its love anyway. From Hana's parents, from that doctor, and from Makoto. And of course from Hana to Makoto. So I have to respect a story that can make such a visceral, solid depiction of love.
