Manga colds
--Never involve sneezing, coughing or snot
--Always involve fever and weakness
--Often involve hospital visits and fever medication
--Are usually fast-onset and end quickly and cleanly once the fever breaks

I have this feeling that sometime way in the past someone translated "24 hour flu" as "cold" and everyone has just followed that original translation ever since . . .

I think it's more likely to be common flu (influenza) rather than 24 hour flu, since you never hear anything about stomach pain or diarrhea. Also, the patients usually wear face masks (which shouldn't be necessary if it's 24 hour flu), and although there isn't snot in this manga specifically, a lot of manga/anime "colds" do involve snot and a runny nose.

If a person is bedridden with a fever, it's not a cold. I really hate this trope. Call it something else.

I mean, it can be a way to distinguish the cold-induced fevers from the more serious ones (flu/etc).

Colds don't induce fevers. If there's a fever, it isn't a cold.
