I am only on chapter 5 or so and all I want to do is rant about how retarded everyone involved is.

The protagonist is a dumbass for engaging in prostitution effectively on a whim. That's what it is, regardless of how cutesy the art style is. If this was hetero and was on a hentai website, it'd have the Corruption tag, because this is exactly how those works go - gradually grooming the femc into liking it despite not agreeing to it.

I wish I was more eloquent, because I am sure what I feel about this manga is totally not getting transmitted, but this is pretty high up there in the hall of fame of toxic relationships.

@sunspawn If we were talking RL yeah but this is manga logic - the girl is 'really' a lesbian and doesn't know it, the other girl really likes her and is using this method to reveal the truth to her- and once she understands they can be happy together. And she actually likes what is happening (though she wont admit it to herself) because otherwise she'd refuse- she doesn't need money that bad.

That is the kind of logic I'm assuming this manga is going with and how it ends up- I could be wrong. So their relationship is probably not seen as toxic at all.

Yay, a side chapter!
And the remastered version will be the perfect chance to re-read it before the new chapter comes out in July.

Absolutely!

gradually grooming the femc into liking it despite not agreeing to it.

Except Marika did, and repeatedly does, willingly agree to it, regardless of what her motivation may be. She could always just walk away.

@elevown
I don't see how y'all keep thinking that she's being turned into a lesbian. She's not being converted, her strike zone is being expanded and she's at best being turned bi. Marika, who was more or less completely ignorant of a lesbian perspective, is being given insight and has her horizons expanded. Conversion, turning a straight girl into a lesbian, would require actively making her not interested in guys. While we don't know how much she's really into guys, there are no hints that Aya is trying to induce a revulsion towards guys and het romance and sex.

^Did I ever say she was a straight girl? I said she THINKS she is straight but is really a lesbian and doesn't know it- the other girl is not CONVERTING her- just making her realise her true self. As I said.

And sure, yes, maybe bi not lesbian- but since the manga will obviously end up with them a couple there is no way to guess any possible future interest in guys assuming they ever broke up- so since we will leave them (im betting) in a happy sex filled relationship - I'm just gonna consider her a yuri girl from then on. (assuming we are not told otherwise).
I
V @sunspawn Says who? nobody needs to say its blindingly obvious thats the whole point of the manga- we know it from reading other works. There's zero point speculating about what she is 'really' thinking like she's a real person in a real life situation when she's a character fulfilling an obvious plot. And that plot is she does not dislike what she is doing hence she keeps doing it, and will grow to like it more and more. THAT is this stories basic premise- just give it a pass if you cant enjoy it.

Sure, that possibility can't be ruled out. I thought I remembered her mentioning being interested in guys at the start, but looking at it now she basically only ever says that she's totally not into girls. The point is that Fuwa can't really know Marika's "true self" (we rarely truely do), so some people quite forcefully asserted that she's converting her, which is just a malapropism that rubs me the wrong way. Even if she were actually straight at the start, Fuwa still wouldn't be converting her, as she's not erasing any interest in guys, but simply adding an interest in girls.

She'll end up being "effectively lesbian", regardless, yeah.

Says who? Let's ignore the genre and our experience with these sorts of mangas and look at the situation from a more detached perspective - a young girl lures another young girl with money and slowly gets her used to escalating sexual acts, starting with skinship that the latter initially finds uncomfortable and eventually moving to outright molestation - and this is with around 3 months of time left in their deal. If you ignore things outside the work and look at it critically, it's really disturbing, or at least that's the way it seems to me.

Hindsight (which will come with time) and prior experience with the genre aside, "you are really into it, even if you refuse to acknowledge it" sounds like something a rapist would say. In fact, if the art style was different and the same things were portrayed in a different perspective, it'd totally be seen that way. I strongly ask you to shelf your gut reaction and take a bit of time to think it through, even if you reach the same conclusions at the end.

I am probably speaking to a wall, but it's really frustrating to non-stop hear the same copy and paste reactions.

I agree insofar as we can't know Marika's "genuine" sexuality (if you will), and I totally agree that the framing of the situation does influence its interpretation and gut reaction.
That's what fiction is for. It's not real, so we can have thought experiments and unrealistically cutesy things that would normally be at least morally dubious or would never happen that way. I mean, isn't that basically all that porn is? Even so, I think our understanding of the characters' motivations and their agency is the more important factor that allows us to not be upset by it. (edited to highlight the most important sentence here)

Take this example from the first chapter of Warikan. Two charcters of which we know that they'll end up at least somewhat pursuing a lesbian relationship, yet this first encounter feels radically different from what Arioto does.
Both series have amazing art, but where Arioto is a cute, super horny comedy, Warikan is a beautifully wretched, super horny drama series. The comparison, especially considering that scene, is rather apt: Both Kaburagi (Aya) in Warikan as well as Marika in Arioto originally enter the situation willingly, thinking they know what they're getting into.
Granted, Kaburagi wants a lover while Marika is initially motivated by money, yet Kaburagi is the one to remove herself from the situation because she's just so taken aback. Marika's reaction is always "meh, this isn't so bad, totally worth it for the pay". She can stop at any time, yet she keeps coming back for more. That should be hint enough that Fuwa isn't the only one here that's slightly messed up ;)

Edit: Oh yeah, forgot to make the second point of that tangent, picking up on characters' motivations again: We know Fuwa's (and Marika's) motivation in Arioto, because she's very much upfront about it. She's manipulative, but she literally tells Marika that she's trying to manipulate her. We did not (fully) know and understand Sei's motivation in Warikan, thus being much more critical of the latter's interaction. Not that knowing Sei's motivation would have changed all that much in this case, she was being really toxic and not one bit playful there.

I feel really bad for the translator and editor of this series, this thread always full of stupid arguing. Like this author's works cannot be taken seriously lol, everything is just for comedy...
Anyway,
I really appreciate your work, guys!!! Thank you!! I really hope we can get the Vol3 of the novels soon!!

But isn't the "arguing" part of the fun?
I mean, if the TL team weren't doing such a bang-up job, we probably wouldn't be quite so giddy about it, would we?

It seems it was, lol. Love that name, btw. Aya sucks at shortening titles.

At this point of things, everybody and their uncle should have realized that this story has no political correction whatsoever: it's just a self-satisfaction fantasy, and the Japanese don't like pc stuff getting into their fantasies. That “purei” Aya forced Marika to do was about a lesbian girl who has a cute girlfriend but is kidnapped by a dastardly lady stalker who locks her in a basement then proceeds to rape her every day for the next few months... and the kidnapped girl loves it and totally falls for the villain: after two months in that basement, she's already saying mushy lines like "Compared to my prim and proper girlfriend, your evil kisses are SO much more unforgettable! ♡ " That's the sort of dominance/conquering/corruption fantasy Aya likes to picture in her mind while she shlicks... and it's okay, it's her damn beeswax, she's entitled to it and no real people were harmed in the process of reaching that orgasm!

In the same way, Aya and Marika are just an expression of Teren Mikami's own fantasies. Yeah, Marika is a "normal" chick who isn't into girls, and yeah, because of the bet she has to submit like it or not to Aya's sexual harrying, and yeah, after three months of this regime she will be so crazy about Aya she'll happily and completely surrender to her conqueror. That's just how the story goes. Saying things like "Marika is actually a lesbian and Aya's making her discover it" doesn't change anything to these basic facts; it's just an attempt to sanitize the plot to make it more acceptable for Western pc sensibilities. A really bad attempt, imho, because it seeks to add a correction varnish to something that originally is (and never pretended to be otherwise) shamelessly and barefacedly incorrect.

I mean, we don't really know either way, so you may be right, or she may have just chosen this because it fit the theme of her corrupting Marika and therefore would make Marika connect more with her character.

Well, sure, saying that Marika is actually a lesbian may be a bit much, but at the same time, it's undeniable that she herself admitted finding Aya sexy already before the corruption started, and despite her denial has always reacted well to Aya's advances. So while this clearly is a conquering fantasy, there's also truth to the view that Marika herself is not as straight as she thinks herself to be, although indeed most likely not strictly lesbian.

I honestly think Aya handled this chick a lot better than I would have. If I had heard the protag say something like that so loudly I would have gotten so irritated I'd have chewed her ass out. She clearly is the type who acts first and considers the consequences later - no matter how well she can read the room, she still tends to jump headfirst into situations and speaks her mind without thinking about who might hear it.

Aya...please, don't lose!

True, if we ignore all the context and details, we can make the story sound as horrible as possible

And judging by her own internal monologue, while in this particular case she indeed seems to actually hang to this belief (although by chapter 5 she's already gone from totally impossible to just impossible for her, and even that seems mostly out of stubbornness), she's not necessarily even speaking her mind but just saying what she thinks is the best choice to say in a given situation to keep her popularity.
