If I recall correctly, she wrote something that said Nana and Hitomi were her favourites out of what she'd done so far. Can't find it now, I recall it was a page not included in the official volumes.

That's actually pretty interesting to hear. Seeing as Girl Friends seems to be her most popular series (well at least in the west, I don't know whether her subsequent series were more popular or not in Japan though I recall hearing Girl Friends performed fairly poorly there) I kinda thought it'd probably be her favorite. The series doesn't seem to be nearly as popular as Girl friends but it really has a unique charm to it.

I do use it too. I know its good to avoid anti virus and ahem other ads too. But turn it off for site who request me to turn it off when ads are their primary income.

Rather than simply turning it off because a site asks you to the most reasonable actual option is to vet their ad service first. For example I disable my blocker for Project Wonderful's ad service because their ads are very reasonable. (And two sites I frequent use their ads too but I unblocked them not because those sites asked but because I vetted the service first.)

Also avoiding an antivirus isn't a good idea. You should always run an antivirus just in case but you should also be careful what links you click and what sorts of scripts you let run on your computer as well. Antiviruses are imperfect but so are people. Even if you're very cautious you're going to slip up eventually so it's best to cover yourself for that eventuality.

You do know it effects that site's income? As they get money from them to show ads.

Also affects the security of your computer, even if you're careful. The last piece of malware I got was back in 2011 before I started using an ad blocker. It came from Google Ads on a trusted site and on top of that was somehow missed by both my antivirus and Malwarebytes until it was way too late. (My antivirus somehow never caught it and Malwarebytes missed it twice before finally picking it up.)

This one will always be my favorite story by her. It's not as polished as Girl Friends (which was in fact the first yuri manga I ever read) but I still enjoy it more.

Mare was among the last, maybe the last, of her earlier works, and I think it's probably the best of those. It is well worth reading as long as you don't expect something like Girlfriends and watch out for that first chapter with it's horrifying rape scene. Well it is a horror manga.

Horror is one of my favorite genres (pretty much tied for first with yuri in fact) so it being horror or being different than her normal work isn't a huge concern to me. The biggest reason I was iffy on it was actually the whole rape thing. Other than that it actually sounds like it could be pretty interesting.

FWIW, I kind of liked Mare when I read it. Unfortunately short of character development in the end, could have stood a little more depth overall to make us really invested in what was happening, but pretty good overall. Nevri has the right of it, this isn't really intended as porn either. It's sexual horror, where what would otherwise be intimate is subverted in the service of making the reader feel discomfort rather than aroused.

This makes me feel a little more interested in reading it. It's been on my to-read list for awhile because it sounds kinda interesting but at the same time I haven't been sure about it. Though either way I just haven't gotten around to reading it anyways, lol. I kinda have a bunch of visual novels I still need to get around to that I've been trying to prioritize when I have the energy and motivation to do something. (Just went through Ebi-hime's Asphyxia yesterday and started on Muv-luv today which sounds like it'll take awhile if the main character doesn't annoy me tot he point of quitting, not that this bit is even remotely on-topic other than Asphyxia at least being yuri.)

This is completely wrong, lol. If you think this then you probably haven't been terribly close to many women. The only difference is that men are perverted whether they're only around other men or not while women tend to keep it only between women generally.

That was pretty interesting but the fact it's apparently just a oneshot seems a bit of an odd choice. Feels like there should be at least one more chapter or something.

That was exactly my thought. A light-haired delinquent who's not actually so bad and a dark-haired and rather quirky girl who usually comes off as emotionless and who manages to worm her way into the delinquent girl's heart. Not that that's at all bad or anything. Seems like it'll be an interesting, if slightly disjointed, series and it has rather nice art.

It's the uncle who willed your family the house. The implication is that he (likely sexually) abused the father when he was a child, and was later cut out of his life entirely, leading later to the father writing books about a man who no one believes. As for the uncle, he felt so guilty about it he became a recluse, and later a drug addict. He made one last effort to reconcile, but in the end died alone.

Huh, I think I missed a good chunk of that somehow. Either that or I forgot it because only parts of what you're saying sound familiar to me.

Nezchan posted:

There's also a non-plot-relevant suggestion that the reason for all the secret passages is that the house was involved in the liquor trade during prohibition.

That would explain a lot. Though I wonder how big of a deal Prohibition was here in Oregon. Basically everything I've ever personally heard about it always focuses on the SE US.

Well, it's kind of happy, but then you realize that both of them gave up their families and your sister probably gave up her dream of becoming a writer. So they did have to sacrifice in order to be together.

I'm not sure why she'd have to completely give up her dream. She may have to out it off for awhile but it's definitely something she can get back to later. I can't speak for other girl's family but the main character's sister's family seems likely to at least accept it eventually even if they disapprove of it. Especially if the main character is fine with it and shows her support.

Plus, there's that whole side plot of your dad and uncle, and what happened between them that made your father obsessed with writing about someone who nobody would believe. Not to mention the uncle's eventual fate. Kind of a happy, or at least hopeful, ending for dad though.

I remember there being a subplot with the dad but for the life of me I can't remember anything about an uncle. (I actually haven't played it in quite awhile myself.) I do agree that the bits of side plot are interesting though.

Real spoilers, be warned.

Actually, I was hoping for and kind of expecting a good end. And of course at no point was it implied that anyone was suicidal and it wasn't that kind of game. And yet with what was being heard from the sister toward the end, I still half expected to find her corpse in the attic. I was super glad that wasn't the case and the sister found her happy end.

I think most people felt more or less the same way at that point. Even if it's a fairly cliche development and the outcome is to be expected they at least did a decent job at making that bit tense.

The developer's Twitter stated they made the game free because there was entirely too much depressing stuff going on this week, what with the election in the US and all. Not to mention, the game's been around quite a while and they're about to release their new game, Tacoma, in a couple of months so it's smart to have goodwill among players.

Oh, they've actually been working on another game? I hadn't heard of that until just now. Also Tacoma sounds like a really uncreative name for a game by a Portland-based developer.

The only fix I saw was

16-bits program error message in 64-bits W7...

And it points to that windows pc repair tool. Am I overlooking something?

There's a fix in the first post:

While Windows 7 64-bit does not have a "config.sys" file, one has been added to "C:\" that contains:
Files=130
Buffers=1000

though to be fair they worded things strangely.

I still don't know what's going on with my old XP, but here's the update on my Windows 7 laptop.

I rebooted the machine, then tried to run the setup again. After it just sat there with the hour glass again for a while just like before, I left it to it and started looking at other things on the net. Then, several minutes later, setup finally started running and properly installed the game.

So the game finally seems to be working properly on my laptop; thanks for all the help and sorry for all the trouble. I'll post something about my impressions of the game later.

Well that's good at least. Hopefully you find the game worth the trouble.

I got SP3 reinstalled on my XP machine and reinstalled GoneHome. Now it runs... but it just gives me a blank screen with a mouse pointer. And Starship Titanic won't work even in compatibility mode. Oh well.

Is that windows pc repair tool that forum points to really ok to run? I've always avoided random software packages claiming to repair or update your computer on the grounds that they were sketchy, and instead relied on automatic updates and restore points.

Well that's unfortunate. You might need to try updating your graphics drivers and reinstalling the game if it still doesn't work.

And I don't see a pc repair tool on that link so it's probably an ad. (Unless I'm just overlooking something really blatant.) Sevenforums, however, is a decently reputable site as far as I'm aware. I find their problem-solving threads to be far more useful than the ones on Microsoft's own site since these people actually try to give useful answers rather than the typical "reinstall Windows/run X utility you've probably already run or is blatantly not going to fix it/etc." answers you find on their site.

It's a 64-bit version. It's an old computer and has a ton of background threads most of which I don't know what they are.
The game doesn't even start to install, it hangs up until I try to reboot, then it gives the error message I mentioned above.

Well that's even stranger then. 16-bit programs can't run on 64-bit Windows to begin with. They have to be emulated and 64-bit Windows drops 16-bit emulation support in favor of 32-bit emulation support since that's more relevant. So I really have no idea what's up with that one.

Ah, I forgot! I'm running SP1 since my old copy of Starship Titanica won't run on service pack 3. Guess I'll try reinstalling it if I can find where I put that download. I'll let you know if that fixes it.

Hopefully that'll fix it so you can play then.

Edit: After a bit of looking around it does seem like there can be issues with 64-bit Windows and errors like the one you had. ( http://www.sevenforums.com/performance-maintenance/272691-16-bits-program-error-message-64-bits-w7.html ) Can't find much on what exactly causes it though and the fix in that thread may not necessarily fix the problem for you either. I've seen the same solution in several places so far and some of them have reported the fix working for a few days then coming back.

I'm sorry about stupid question, but I never used the itch.io before and I have no clue how it works. Do I just need to download it and it will work fine or I need to create account and claim it now, cos if I don't, once the promotion is over I won't be able to play it anymore? Or do I need account to play it in the first place?

I don't think you need an account to get it unless they changed that at some point. And you should be able to continue downloading it since the download link can be sent to your email. However it's best to make an account just to be safe. (And if it still works like it did when I made my account you should be able to migrate stuff from your email to your account if you get stuff before making an account.)

Yuri Girl 1001 posted:

I downloaded it on my G3 connection which took 3 or 4 hours.

I tried to install it on my Windows 7 laptop; it hangs up and when I get any response at all, it talks about to many 16 bit files open in other programs and increasing the FILES in config.sys.

I tried installing it on my old Windows XP desktop. it installed but when I ran it, it immediately erred out saying "GoneHome32.exe - Entry Point Not Found" "The procedure entry point EncodePointer could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll."

Does anyone have any idea how I can get it to work on one of these machines?

I have no idea what the Windows 7 issue is since 16-bit programs shouldn't even be relevant for Gone Home. Are you running a 32-bit version of Windows 7 on that laptop? If so it could just mean that you have too many background processes running for the game to be able to run. Not entirely sure what the one for your XP desktop is since the game can run on XP SP2. If your computer isn't running SP2 or SP3 that might explain it though, in which case you'd need to update Windows for it to run on that one.

Most specifically, as you can see in that entry, John Stuart Miller made the following quote in 1867:

Speaking of stickying threads it'd also probably be a good idea to unsticky the Hanako Games and Nakatani Nio × Canno − Crossed interview threads since they're old news at this point and people are no longer actively discussing them. Important forum related threads and active/new noteworthy news are good to keep stickied but old and inactive news threads ends up kinda clogging up the front page of the forums.

The big issue here is that even if charges don't get brought against him he's at least as directly implicated in this incident as Clinton was in the emails one, if not actually more so. And for someone who claims to be going against corruption it makes Trump look very bad to even be considering someone who's facing such a controversy.

And so far, from what I'm hearing about cabinet choices, basically everything people said about him not being anti-establishment or against corruption and so on is true. Plenty of big business people who only stand to lose if they do what he previously has said he'll do. There's also Newt Gingrich who's the candidate for Secretary of State. People who claimed Clinton was a warhawk feared that she would appoint him and for good reason. He's supported most of our bullshit wars in the past 20 years and in fact things we don't do enough. Trump claims to be against corruption yet one of his cabinet candidates is Chris Christie. A man facing corruption charges currently.
