(As for the type, this seems to be a forced quasi-arranged marriage. The parents aren't picking the groom, but they're telling Makino she needs to pick one, and they're lining up interviews.)

Arranged marriages were common across the entire world. I don't know how relevant they are for Japan's elite families, but obviously there's enough cultural memory for it to work for the intended audience.

I think Fuyuki and Eri would be a fine relationship if they confessed.

Eri herself just said she falls in love with people who say they're in love with her. Imagine if Fuyuki, someone Eri is already bonded to, had ever stepped up.

(Of course, it would be possible that Eri is Just That Straight sexually, or homophobic, or otherwise incompatible in some key way. But still..)

I don't dislike Eri, I like all characters. Eri even acknowledge when she was being a hypocrite, she was honest to her boyfriend. I'm liking it, I don't mind the overused plot device. I'll read it until the end, thank you translation team.

The use of "Lady Smollett" out loud around Elsa was a translation mistake and it will be changed/noted in future chapters. Originally, no one uses any part of Yvonne's name when referring to her. They always refer to her by a generic title. For example Linda always calls her "my lady" and the others call her something like "the young lady". So Elsa doesn't know her first name or what family she's from.

Plus, forgetting the sexuality stuff, I would say most teenagers don't have that kind of sex life at such young age, so it's even less probable.

It's not typical, but a high level of sexual activity isn't so rare as to stretch plausibility. I knew people in high school who were definitely getting it on a lot. And this is an idol band, they're selected for being cute and attractive.

The entire band being girls who like girls is a bigger a stretch, or would be if they were thrown together at random[1], but queer people sometimes clump up socially, so if it was a group of friends then they might be pre-selected for that too.

[1] Even if we take 50% of women as being bisexual/lesbian, 4 of 4 being bi would have a 1/16th chance. If 25% are bi or lesbian, less than 1% chance.

This chapter was kind of confusing.

Tokyo is expensive, especially per sqft, but AIUI it has stayed about as expensive, modulo general inflation, since the 1980s. And if you don't have much money you have options like renting a tiny apartment that's a 15 minute walk from your 45 minute subway ride, in a neighborhood where you can probably walk or at least bike to a grocery story.

Meanwhile, cities like Boston and SF have tripled or worse in rent in the past 20 years. Downsized apartments without parking are banned by zoning codes, and living far out means you need to spend thousands of dollars on a car anyway.

I wonder if it would help to be out as a couple. Hurt more by discrimination against gays, or helped more by "we're not friends waiting for husbands, we're together"?
