I missed that the first time. That pushes Ema out of the "well intentioned but overbearing" camp and into the "bullying with strong hints of yandere" camp. She's basically threatening Midori to make her love her.

Is Ema actually abusing Midori or something? It looks like Ema's stepping on Midori's foot in the last page which seems a bit ominous given how ominous the whole story is. I don't know if it's just symbolism or something though since no one has mentioned that yet lol.

Edit: Well, I got ninja'd. Still, I wonder what's happening here... I'd love to see a followup to this story where Midori actually rejects Ema.

Yeah, that shifts the whole story in a darker direction. Just... damn.

If I'm interpreting this correctly, Midori doesn't actually like Ema, but is going along with her for the same reason she went along with the bullies: because she's too passive to say no, and too afraid of being hated.

Come on, Namori, why you gotta make these unhappy stories? What did these poor girls ever do to you?

Haven't they made it obvious by now that the reason they aren't "dating" is because they don't feel a need to define their relationship in that way? It's not that they don't love each other, because they do. It's that their relationship simply IS, without needing or wanting to put labels on it.

I'm wondering how their relationship developed in this AU. I'd like to imagine that, even if Yuu didn't end up with Touko here, she and Sayaka still managed to help get Touko through all her issues and stuff.

It's possible that after fulfilling her sister's goal and realizing that she no longer had a purpose in life, Touko fell into depression and eventually committed suicide.

...But I'll go with your interpretation instead.

Correct. She's made up a delusional relationship in her head and is messaging herself on both sides of the conversation.

The classical magical girl answer is that Vena was turned evil by some dark power and the "good" critter wants to help him remember himself and stop being evil.

That said, there are some clues suggesting things are not as simply black and white as they seem, so the mascot critters may actually be up something else entirely..
