... also kinda weird that something that looks like it was abruptly axed gets published in the West? :P

Being cut short helps with its chance of getting licensed, if you ask me. I notice that almost all obscure series licensed in English are on the shorter side (3,4 volumes or less). Scarlet got picked up by Seven Seas even though it was brutally axed with only 2 volumes. Meanwhile 10+ volumes series never get picked up unless they have anime. Publishers probably prefer short series because because it's less of a commitment and they can avoid diminishing returns on niche series.

I'm not going to speculate (here) but... it seems a lot of Yuri works with a certain tone have been getting the axe. A real shame because even if it's not the best having a lot of diversity is really nice for us Yuri lovers.

It's just recency bias. Manga get axed left and right on a weekly basis. Each series has its own circumstance (magazine, reader demographic, sales, author, editor...) so it's impossible to draw a trend out of individual cancellations. More yuri getting made also means more yuri getting axed. It's the nature of the beast.

Wait, why is the July issue of Yuri Hime already out? It's not even June yet

That how Yuri Hime works. July issue is released in May, August issue is released in June, etc. I though that was pretty well known around these parts.

It's here finally. This work won silver at last year Japan International Manga Award (the artist Monday Recover is in the photo). Relatively short too (6 chapters + extra).

The writer's name sounds pretty similar to the protagonist's, so I wonder if there is autobiographical element here.

And far too often, when people release a new chapter as an April Fools chapter, websites never actually update it with the real chapter, so you're just left with a joke of a chapter.

No less than what shitty aggregators deserve.

I've been holding out in hope that someone will redo the MTL chapters. Guess I'll have to go and read them now.
Hope this series gets an official release soon.

Waa…? Where did they get the other 3 chapters? I’ve been checking the raws at https://ichijin-plus.com/comics/20840872984740 and the latest is Ch.12

That's just the official online platform, not the place the manga is actually serialized in. Those sites are usually several chapters behind raws. The series is up to chapter 19 with this month issue of YuriHime, and actually ending next chapter.

Not counting the bonus and cameo, Ayaka x Yurine has four volumes worth of content (half of 1,3,5,7,8,9 and entirety of volume 10. Mizuki x Moe has one volume of focus (half of 1 and 4). Chiharu x Izumi also has one volume (half of 2 and 6). The rest has half a volume for each couple/trio (Kaoru's group of friend actually has only one chapter)

I'm a bit sad that Ai (Ayaka and Yurine's mutual friend) and Kaoru (the girl who have had a crush on Yurine since middle school) don't have pairings of their own. They don't show up in the last chapter, or appear on any front volume cover. At first I thought Ai was paired with her astronomy senpai Maya, but nothing came of it.

I wonder how people reacted to Ayaka's design change midway through the series. Her face was rounder, and her hair much wavier at the beginning. At the end, Ayaka's hair are pretty much straightened out, except for the tips.

And what's with Mizuki still claiming Moe as her best friend when they're about to move in together? It's not like she has any reason to hide their relationship, given that a) everyone can see it, and b) this school is full of lesbians who are explicitly dating.

Jesus. The Viz translator couldn't make up his mind on how Konatsu addresses Koyuki. Heck, he literally couldn't keep it consistent across 2 consecutive pages.

And here we go with the misnaming again (same page for reference). You would think that after nearly 8 volumes, the translator would finally remember the two main character names. But apparently it's too hard to remember that the light hair kouhai here is called Konatsu, while Koyuki is the black hair senpai on the other side of the phone. How someone screw up 'translating' names in the first place is beyond me.

Of course the important moment arrives in chapter 28 when Koyuki asks Konatsu to call her by her given name, signaling a change in their relationship. Except that in official translation they are already on first name basic at various points previously. Gotta give it to Viz for their quality translation.

Now if only someone could translate 貓與海的彼端 by the same artist. It won a silver at the 2022 International Manga Awards. That story is truly beautiful.

Chapter 1 is translated on Mangadex under the title Sea You There and Us. Let's see if I can get the mods to upload it here.

Isn't Asumi a little insensitive toward Serina? Out of all her prostitute 'friends', she had to pick the one with a crush on her to ask for dating advices.

Now this is interesting. I wonder if if Bo He's dream is actually some kind of premonition.

The word used to describing Huang Qi in the title (風流 - literally 'wind and flow') has various meanings, including elegant, refined, unrestrained, romantic, or promiscuous.

The series has ended with 8 chapters, compiled in a single volume. This is an adaptation of a stand-alone novel so it was always meant to be a short serialization.

(The original story was picked up for manga adaptation because it won the Yuri Hime Award at the 3rd Yuri Literary Contest.)

it was the most censored way of saying they has sex……..to the point that even at the end of the chapter I was like……that must has been an nice feet massage! really hate the dumb censorship of the fact that it wasn’t much of even implying of segs since the censorship was soooo ugly

That's not what censorship means even if you apply the term loosely. This is a discretion shot where something is not shown in explicit detail but everyone and their mothers knows exactly what is happening. This series has been relatively innocent so far and it wouldn't suddenly show Yvonne diving between Elsa's legs. Just seeing Elsa reacting to the sex in real time (and Yvonne licking her finger suggestively) is already way too racy for nearly all non-adult series out there.

Don't buy the Viz official translation. First of all, they got rid of all honorifics per their localization policy. It is okay in some cases, but I think a series that relies heavily on dialogue and nuance like this one suffers from such a change . And there are various consistency issues that stand out to a casual reader like me. Koyuki refers to Kaede by first name then switches to last name in the span of 4 pages (chapter 18). I guess the translator wanted to make the characters sound like they're on a first name basic (they aren't) but failed to apply the change consistently.

And then this blatant mistake in Koyuki's monologue (chapter 10) that could have been avoided with the slightest bit of attention:

In this scene Koyuki thinks about how she has changed because of Konatsu (fan translation). But apparently the translator didn't bother to remember the main character names, or he thought Konatsu was the one doing the monologue. Either way, this kind of careless mistake is unacceptable for an official translation from a major publisher. The quality control (or lack thereof) speaks volume about how little Viz cares about their products.

Mistakes aside, the translation zigzags between heavy localization at some points and playing it too safe at others. Early on the characters speak like stereotypical American teenagers (Can you imagine Koyuki ever exclaiming: "Oh man, this is gonna suck!"?) with a health dose of "yes ma'am" on the side. This is toned down soon, only to be replaced by dispassionate, by-the-book dialogue. At the fireworks scene (chapter 8) in fan translation, Konatsu asks Koyuki "Why did you call out to me when we first met?". The official version of this line is merely "Why did you speak to me?" which reduces the impact in my opinion.

It's not necessarily the translator's fault that this release quality is subpar. The translator, John Weery, is one of the main guys at Viz who are in charge of several weekly Shounen Jump series. Given his overwhelming workload on a weekly basic, it wouldn't be a surprise if this niche series wasn't high on his priorities (heck, he even made similar mistakes in the flagship mainstream series Demon Slayer). Not to mention that Nettaigyo is hardly similar to your average battle shounen in both tone and style. The real question is why Viz assigned this series to someone who was both overworked and unsuitable for the content, and why they failed to provide any degree of professional quality control/proofreading. Though we all know the answer is because they simply don't care.
/rant

TL/DR: Official translation is horrible with various mistakes, consistency issues, and overall just feels bland. Do yourself a favor and read the fan translation. Buy Japanese version if you want to support the author, but don't reward Viz for a botched job of a translation.

I know the posts right above were talking about her new serialization but according to Mangaupdates that seems to have ended already with a volume compilation being released a few weeks ago. Not sure if that's accurate.

I don't know where that poster got the info from, but I can't find any news about a serialization, let alone one with 10 chapters. Hagino Makoto's latest book that you mentioned is a collection of five short stories with sci-fi theme.

... yeah what's with these celebrity stories indeed, are the characters at least a reference to some actual celebrities and this is just some weird quasi-fanfiction, or do manhua writers just like this theme for some reason?

CEOs and celebrities to China (and Korea) is like high school girls to Japan in term of prevalence in their respective media.

I got mad because I expected comments about the chapter, but got page count complaints instead

Probably because there is not a lot of content to comment about. And people would naturally be taken aback when the new chapter is one third of the usual length.

As for the reason why, I guess the mangaka was busy preparing for her other series' first tankobon, which was released last month.
