If there's any criticisms I have towards the show, it's that the commentary can sometimes feel incredibly shallow and perfunctory. It says some important things, but doesn't really talk about them in any detail- we know bullying and molestation and stalking are bad, but the show doesn't do much more than shouting this out at maximum volume with stylish fight scenes in the background. The first two episodes devoted a decent amount of time to their respective suicide victims, but the recent ones have them feel much more like plot devices intended to parallel the trauma of our own heroines and lead them to realizations instead. This gets particularly blatant when you have 2-3 victims per episode, because we don't have any time to delve into the specifics of the case or appreciate the intricacy of the monsters, and it just feels like an excuse to pour in sakuga and cool catchphrases rather than exploring the fate of the victims.

The allegory turns into pure aesthetic, the villains become cartoonish caricatured monsters instead of individuals who exploit vested social systems

I'd argue that the monsters being cartoon caricatures is exactly the point and that it does a good job of providing characterization to each victim. The monsters are personifications of how the victims view their abusers. And it's even better when the victims in the end eventually overcome their trauma and help out in the fight against said monsters (like the girl who was molested pretending to be seductive as a means of letting Momoe get the advantage or the sisters who committed suicide assisting Ai and Rika). It helps in making them feel less like simple damsels in distress and more like actual people. Also if every episode dedicated enough time to meticulously exploring each theme then there wouldn't be any time to explore the main cast lol.

A Place Further Than The Universe really just ended with three 10/10 episodes in a row huh....

I've been watching A Place Further than the Universe and while I'm usually not a fan of CGDCT shows I am loving this! Shirase, Mari and Hinata are really well written characters with wonderful dynamics all around.

My mom has tried to refute him repeatedly to no avail. My parents have been arguing about the election for months. The majority of their arguments end with my dad screaming at her about how she's "brainwashed" and refuses to "look at the facts". I personally think that the best way to help my dad would be to set him up to have a discussion with someone who's an expert on these topics and educate him. I think maybe my brother can talk with him.

Oof, I haven’t gotten personal on this thread in years but this topic about Trump’s coup, the Antichrist and this Election really hits home for me. My dad has been watching conspiracy videos nonstop for the past several months and it’s been worrying me. He’s been watching Steve Bannon, Ben Shapiro, Dan Bangino and several other channels complaining about the left and the “mainstream media”. Now he's sounds batshit insane. He’s defended every case of police brutality that’s been reported (and then turns around and deems Antifa a terrorist organization when he watches videos of Trump supporters being attacked by them). He’s gone on tangents about how China is trying to take over the world and that the U.S. can only stop it if Trump wins or some shit. He talks about how the covid vaccine is the mark of the beast (despite the fact that it’s impossible for a computer chip to be small enough to fit inside a syringe yet at the same time be able to be tracked by a satellite). He rants about how Christians are apparently being oppressed and claims Trump is “God’s way of punishing atheists who’ve slandered his people”. And the worst part is that he seems adamant to get me on his side too. The last Trump rally he went to he cut off the internet to the house so I’d have nothing to do while he’s gone (thankfully I had my hotspot) and he plays his conspiracy videos out loud and refuses to wear headphones. Plus not only that he keep obsessing over the rapture and keeps calling dates for when it’s supposed to happen (despite being wrong every time).

Thank goodness he’s the only person in my family that buys into this crap. My mom tells me that he’s going through a phase and I sincerely hope that’s true.

Oh well, I'm really enjoying Majo no Tabitabi. I find Elaina to be a really fascinating character, she only helps people if either a) she likes them or b) she get's something out of it. And the criteria for her liking someone is really messed up if we look at her bias towards witches. Like how she puts up with the way Flan treats her for so long before calling her out. Or the fact that she goes out of her way to help Saya train to become a witch despite having more important matters to worry about.

If you take these factors into account it becomes understandable why she wouldn't help Nino in episode 3 (with the flower field there really was nothing she could do). Helping Nino would require carrying her around for hours, possibly days, looking for an orphanage or shelter that'll take her in. And she's just not willing to spend that much effort on someone who isn't a witch.

Let's headcannon that her ears are clean but she's a germaphobe so she asked Kuroko to clean them anyway.

Mai-HIME came so close to being a 10/10 anime but the final episode was such a ridiculous and cheesy asspull that undoes everything that had happened. It felt like the writers were forced to end the show in this way. Which if that's the case then that really sucks and if that's not the case then I question if they were paying attention to their own show.

Edit: I was originally mad that at the Shizuru and Natsuki plot point but then I realized that when Yukino says "I saw what you did to Natsuki while she slept" she was referring to Shizuru kissing Natsuki while she was sleeping. But Natsuki assumes the worst case scenario, which shows the viewer a fake flashback of Shizuru taking her clothes off and crawling into Natsuki's bed while she's sleeping. And the theory that she never sexually assaulted her is supported even more when you realize that if she did than Yukino and Haruka shouldn't have seen it. Because they arrive to Shizuru's house when the sun is setting and the "flashback" happens at night. This show is way better than I gave it credit for.
