^ The relevant "critical period" is pegged as birth to six years old so yeah.

'Course, there's also that mention of "people seem to have sexual preferences toward faces that resemble their parents' or their own" in the criticism section so if the avoidance mechanism fails, as is obviously the case here...

I'm bored, this is tangentially related and not well known so Imma just mention the Westermarck effect. It's the reason why people find incest gross incase anyone is wondering.

Not really, it's the psychological mechanism by which people come to identify other people they live with growing up as "kin" and thus undesirable mates (Momma Nature goes ways to discourage consanguinity in all species). Like all psychological mechanisms it can fail spectacularly, of course.

I predict they're going to join forces with the magical girls, I kinda wanted to see them take them out together instead, let's see how this unfolds

I can only imagine how utterly awkward putting out the alliance-of-convenience feelers is going to be tho...
Obvious complication including but not limited to:

  • Kaoruko/Sulfur and her tendency to try to no-nonsense murder the Dark Magical Girls on sight
  • Kiwi/Leo and her mildly pathological issues with the Tres
  • the above two fighting like cats and dogs even in their civvie personas
  • the, uh, everything Utena and Alice have done to the Tres so far >_>

On another note, lmao this exchange

Note that smirk Morishima's sporting at the end. She clearly has a 'type', and that type is tsundere. :d

Oh I am fully aware of your pretentiousness, don't you worry. As usual your preferences do not define anything. You don't get to decide what conversational topics are acceptable or "nane". Done with you. Shoo shoo.

...he says after fighting Tag War Umpteen on basis of subjective notions of what they 'should' mean.

Also, touchy much?

I wondered how a piece of dandelion fluff like this could have 30+ posts already.

I should have known—Tag Wars

My eyes had started unfocusing and getting that particular glassy look halfway down the first page.

It must be hard to have such a short attention span.

I can read 300+ page books in one sitting, thanks. It pains me to have to point out the terribly obvious but the jab was at the utter inanity of the soi-disant debate.

I wish people would start to see relationship related stuff exactly like that. No social pressure and not doing things because it's called normal, but doing things your way and at your pace

That's probably not all that common in Japan, from what I've been told. Okay story time:

A while ago on a Discord server I'm on I somehow ended up having a conversation with a(n English fluent) Japanese woman about how people tend to go about relationships over there. The way she described it, sounded like a lot of people of both sexes basically have no idea whatsoever about how to approach their partner "organically" (in the sense of flexible, spontaneous and "natural"). Instead they default to a somewhat vague set of ritualised assumptions about how you 'should' do it and basically try to play out roles in a script whose meaning they don't really understand, and then often get very confused when people - being the messy and complicated critters they now are - don't respond according to the "formula."

Like two people attempting to communicate not really so much with each other as individuals, but with sort of vague abstract Platonic ideals of each others' "roles" and duly getting Hell of a lot of wires crossed. (Doesn't really help that a remarkable number of people over there reach adulthood without having meaningful casual contact with the opposite sex outside family...)

All of this is obviously anecdotal but it does mesh well with well-attested quirks of Japanese culture and society - particularly an absolute hard-on for conformity and social rituals; Yukawa's reflexive assumption here of there pretty much being a sort of checklist a dating couple should complete fits the description to a tee.

so since the kaiju are human, doesn't that just mean they are going to keep fighting till everyone is dead? and wouldn't that also mean when a kaiju kills one of them someone on their side also dies? calling it now the kaiju are the good guys

It's explicitly stated only some people share an astral body with someone in the "other world" (though how the Organisation knows/has inferred this is not touched upon) - if everyone did then their invasion methodology would be pretty amazingly callous, since from what we've seen it basically amounts to (attempted) unleashing of living engines of indiscriminate mayhem into densely populated areas.

The obvious corollary of which is that should it be successful metric fucktons of their own people (potentially including members of such leadership as there exists) would promptly drop dead as the Kaiju goes Godzilla on a city...

The fact that apparently every single Kaiju "pilot" is such a "dimensional double" OTOH is probably very significant to the larger story, and likely one of the "other side's" major supply-side bottlenecks for fielding the things.

So they went into the danger zone without protection and got wiped by a low level scrub, which any professional bastioneer could one shot. All this so Replacement Goldfish-chan could die off for extra drama.

TBF it's implied that was one of the first, if not the first, cases where a Kaijuu specifically came after such cadet excursions. Implying the "other side" had become aware they were dealing with organised opposition and started looking for ways to attack them directly. (Or they just noticed someone was undoing the damage they were doing to the Wall and arrived at the fairly obvious idea of throwing a Kaiju at the next spot they detected such activity in, same diff - it could be speculated the "other world" first needed to come up with new or at least improved sensors in order to notice it in the first place.)

One would assume the as-yet still unnamed organisation running the Bastioners duly reacted to this change in tactics by thereafter giving such trainee outings proper escorts.

Also doesn't that mean that theire is potentially the same number of Kaijuu that there is of humans ?

One would assume there's prequisites to qualifying as the "pilot" of one, or the "other side" simply can't mass-produce the presumably pretty resource-intensive Kaiju "platforms" at a rate where this would really matter anyway - one notes the buggers are all different to greater or lesser degree (implying "file to fit" craftsman-like fabrication as opposed to standardised industrial production runs), just for starters. And they seem to be incapable of deploying the things en masse in any case; whether the bottleneck is at the recruitement/manufacturing stage or in the method they use to breach the Wall honestly isn't really even important until when/if "this side" tries counterattacking through the looking glass.

Or until such a time "they" manage to find a workaround, ofc, in which case shit suddenly gets real.

Arabian Nights is about how Scheherazade tells a tale each night, with a cliffhanger to avoid being beheaded by the Sultan who wants the end of the tale.

The šāhānšāh actually, the framing story is set in Sassanid Persia ("Arabian Nights" being the rather misleading title of the first English translation from the early 1700s). Which of course makes any number of elements in the individual stories pretty glaringly anachronistic - in particular most of the Historical Domain Characters like Caliph Harun al-Rashid are from the Abbasid era a good two centuries after the Sassanid Empire ceased to exist - but it's not like the professional storytellers or their audiences much cared about such details.
