The problem is people trying very hard to take offense where none was intended. This work was tagged futanari by the author. Tagging it futanari on this site (and not yuri) is perfectly sensible, because it describes the story most accurately.

Realize that 'yuri' is a genre, an established subset of story. It is not the Japanese word for 'lesbians'. Tagging this story futanari and not yuri is in no way a statement about real life trans women's ability to be lesbians, whether they still have their penises or not.

I'm not saying they're trans. I'm saying that people ungender characters based on the presence of a cock. If a cis girl magically grows a penis in a manga, she still identifies as a girl. So her having sex with another girl is still a girl having sex with a girl. By that reasoning it should still be yuri. But the presence of a cock is seen as somehow negating or undermining the character's identity as a girl, so people don't wanna label futa yuri as yuri. The message is that the presence or absence of a cock is what gender's a character. It's saying that girls with cocks aren't girls as much as those without.

The character designs don't really bother me much cuz as big breast focused as the show is like, there's variety in little things. Like the girl with the big areolas. The narrative of "This girl is actually a man" is a narrative the reinforces the belief that trans women are "really" men. Even if the character isn't "trans" it still reinforces that attitude, because the people who negatively portray us don't see our identity as valid to begin with.

The brainwashing falls into the trope of "the mentally ill trans woman", which is another thing common to portrayals of us.

The genital mutilation was pretty much cheap shock factor which is why the previous tropes were used in the first place, and furthermore genital mutilation of a "girl who is really a guy" is pretty much how a lot of cisgender bigots view gender confirmation surgery.

It's not about portraying us as evil as much as its about portraying us as mentally ill "men" who mutilate their genitals.

Not that I expect any explanation to get through to cis people.

The transmisogyny in the latest chapters unfortunately ruined this manga for me. It sucks. It really was my favorite manga and meant a great deal to me.

Can we please change the "transsexual" tag to "transgender"? After several decades of the term being around, its ended up primarily used by bigots and gatekeepers*, whereas trans folks tend to prefer transgender. I'm a trans woman, and I know I'd certainly prefer the tag changed to that, and the reason I'm making this post is because another trans woman I know is also uncomfortable with the current tag.

*People who try to decide who is or isn't "really trans".

EDIT: Another friend brought up that transsexual also tends to reinforce the idea that being trans has to do with sexuality, which it really doesn't. There are straight trans women who are into men and there are lesbian trans women and there are bisexual/pansexual trans women.
