Actually, as I've heard it, the reason why she ever started being depicted as transsexual is because the American branch of Nintendo had concerns about the player character (a man) beating up a woman (this was before the rating system). So, the Japanese creators responded by putting out claims that she was a "new-half" (as they put it).

The original concept art for Poison from before Nintendo could have said anything mentions the "newhalf" slur. So no, that old myth is incorrect.

Fans just become so interested in her because of the controversy that Capcom never bothered to make a clear statement, because it was more profitable this way. And whenever they were asked if Poison is a man they usually answered with "maybe, maybe not". She is canonically trans, but because there was a misunderstanding during localization people become really interested in her to the point where she actually became a playable character and regular part of the roster. It got to the point where making it clear one way or another doesn't give Capcom anything, because the mystery behind her gender was what make her popular in the first place. My source.

Awesome! Only recently stumbled upon Poison's partnership/freindship with Hugo. May not be particularly surprising but it's still pretty sweet! For shame. I never thought to stick her with other SF girls. Did wonder how she and Juri would get along though.

Yuikumari, people are getting fussy because your wording implied that you didn't consider transwomen to be real women. I'm assuming that you probably don't fully understand things like transexuality, and I'll admit that things can get a bit complex, but something you should understand is that Poison is indeed a woman, and that doesn't change even if she's trans.

I'll make it simple: never ask if someone is "a girl or transsexual."
You can ask "are they a girl?", "are they a boy?", or better yet, "what gender are they?"
Then you can ask "are they transgendered?"
It's very important that you ask those as two separate questions, as doing otherwise can be extremely disrespectful.
