Basically, the idea is that, because Japanese words don't tend to convey feelings very well on their own, speaking poetically about the moon/sea/death will help you convey your meaning better. Unfortunately, it doesn't work very well if the person you're talking to is thick :).

rather, they don't want to say it bluntly or directly then anything else, so its a more subtle way to convey their feelings
