I don't play at all, not being a fan of shmups. What I did was simply start reading, and occasionally looking at a wiki when I really couldn't figure it out. Maybe start with a longer series like Silent Sinner In Blue, which at least gives you an idea of who several of the more common characters, like Yukari, Marisa, Reimu, the SDM group, etc. are.
