LGBT activism or any kind of activism for that matter has never been a big part of the Japanese psyche. However, there are no religious objections as you might find in America. The only objections boils down to: "two men? yuck!" rather than any "moral" arguments. The younger generation wouldn't mind such rights, but the older ones are more stubborn.

The idea of same-sex couples raising children boils down to the same prejudices as you might find anywhere: that it's bad for kids, unless of course it's two pretty (and not ugly) lesbians in which case they'd say it's okay. In the law, it is not established, so the only sources of adoption for them as of now are from overseas, and in vitro fertilization options for non-married women are accessible only overseas as well, although there are "unofficial" sperm donation services, although there are risks due to the fact that none of those are backed by medical organizations.

@Person - Thanks for clarifying how the law deals [does not deal] with the topic.

I understand that tradition and not upsetting the apple cart is baked in Japanese society, but I'm rather surprised that more lesbians and gay men are not pushing this societal envelope, and yes I realize this topic was discussed last year when the same-sex marriage certificates topic came up. Just surprised it's not been a bigger issue. For example, I wonder if couples are getting married in countries that recognize same-sex marriage and petitioning that the Japanese government recognize their marriage.

Anyhoo, I didn't mean to dive off into this topic. I just find it extremely interesting and hope to see more progress made in countries like Japan and such.

hurray for this manga and congrats to the mothers-to-be!

so this question is for those that may have more direct knowledge. has society and the laws in Japan changed enough that a noticeable number of lesbians and gays are now having children? i'm also curious how the children are entered into the family registry (which appears to be addressed in a later chapter)? finally, has any new LGBT legislation (other than city ordinances) percolated to the national level addressing marriage equality?

i vote for the latter

Not now, not sad stories when I'm on my period T-T
I can' t stop crying, fuck

shidow, you have my condolences. it seems like when "Beastie" comes to town, she sucks out all the joy in your life. hopefully it's over before you know it.

on a diff. note, if Miko and the others were seeing and talking to Kiyo's ghost/spirit, shouldn't a supernatural tag be added? maybe an almost depressing as fuck tag too 'cuz the whole "Kiyo's tomorrow never came" thing was kind of depressing.

yukito, original! while TNG has its charm and a more realistic feel to it, it was the original series that gave many a fan and scientist license to dream. for example, more than a dozen ideas/items used in the original series exist today. for me, the number one item that comes to mind are communicators or as we know them, cell phones.

plus, considering when the show aired, the FX were pretty good. nothing like today but good at the time. also the stories for the first couple of seasons were really good mindless escapism. in fact, the stupidest episode that comes to mind is 'the trouble with tribble'(i think that's the title). it made no sense and yet it was funny. also, i remember trying to figure out what a tribble really was and if it was kin to a furby.

I love how every time a futa doujin gets uploaded here the discussion just explodes. We take porn so seriously. It's beautiful.

are otakus the only nerds that discuss porn seriously?

hmmm... good question. i suppose some do and some don't. i guess it just depends on which category you fall into.

@flips - wrt Lewis McLaren, the art is really nice and the stories appear laid back. really hoping someone takes up the translating effort.

Fetish aside, I've been following the following three artists (well 5). i kind of wish they were more mainstream because the stories are wonderful. each artist brings a good mixture to storytelling, artwork and kinkiness that i find appealing and engaging.

Main artists:
Feretta: https://e-hentai.org/tag/artist:feretta (futanari)
Leslie Brown: https://e-hentai.org/tag/artist:leslie+brown (yuri+yaoi)
Rupert Everton: http ://e-hentai.org/tag/artist:rupert+everton (all of the above)

Also, check out Dark Gods. It is not bad (there are better) if you don't mind gore, and on the stupid and/or silly side, the artists Transmorpher DDS and Cluzmor are always good for a good laugh or two.

@everyone - hopefully this post doesn't violate some dynasty rule about discussing artists from another site.

So, this plays as a love square;

Well, everyone can see where this will be going. The road to there will just be full of drama and angst.

*sigh* all because Yagi doesn't really understand what it means to be in love (read: she is pretty dense about her own feelings and those of Madeleines')

so it's going to be forced angst and draaaaamma for a bunch of chapters. oh yippy ki yo!
</rant>

but on the upside, there will be more chapters, so we get to see how wierded out each of the couples get until they get the acts together :-)

In case anyone wants to have a read, I posted a new story at The Book Of Kels just a few minutes ago. It's my first attempt at satire, and while it's not yuri per se, the main characters are married lesbians. So there's that.

"We Build Yesterday"

@Nez - cute story. i was a little confused by Y's answer at the end, but that may be because i never bought into that whole 'all powerful' nonsense.

btw, mind if i ask which story you had the most fun writing?

As long time follower of LWB, I expected something much more from this, this is actually quite mild. lol.

very true. the third story looks like it could be just as quirky as this one. will have to wait for the translation to know for sure. tho i still think "the heir of the curse" is the best of all three stories in the anthology.

hey, this is the 3rd story on Dynasty where one of the characters had amnesia. crud, anyone remember the 3rd? i think the MC was in art school or something and her love interest's attitude towards her completely changed. so there's this one, Bright and Cheery, Blank, and i cannot remember the 3rd. anyone know the title?

Art school? Wow I dont think I ever read that one

Probably Watashi no Taisetsu na Tomodachi, if memory serves.

thanks Nez, that's the one!

@ciega I have no idea what I want to do honestly. I thought I wanted to go to grad school until I visited one for physics...their eyes were dead and I couldn't..feel their passion and sense of wonder? Maybe I'm too idealistic and naive. Now I'm considering just selling out and getting an engineering job. Or dropping physics all together and get a doctorate in music theory. Someone please hold my hand through life. I love the idea of teaching college students. Maybe that would suit my ideals more than research if I do go the grad school route...

Alvis - music theory huh? well that would be a complete 180°. btw, do you/did you play an instrument? if so, what?

@everyone - actually, do any of you play an instrument/sing or were you band/choir nerds?

for example, i was a total band nerd. played 4 instruments, sucked horribly at one of the instruments i played. i've always loved guitar and would love to learn how to play it.

@Alice Cheshire

Amnesia doesn't work the way it's so frequently depicted in shows and mangas so it's a kinda moot point. Iirc the most common form of amnesia irl is in fact an inability to create short term memories. Long term memory is unaffected and you don't lose previous memories either.

that may be so i'm not doubting you, but it still can happen. for example, years back i had a really bad motorcycle accident. fell off my bike and landed on my head. out of it for days. i couldn't remember that day and had swiss cheese memory of the previous 6 months. i could recall some things, but others were a complete blank. i suppose it depends on the type and severity of the trauma.

@Alvis

Sometimes I wonder if I should go to grad school or just join the workforce when I'm done.

so the real question is what do you want to do? do you think you'll get more out of going to grad school or more out of working? are you capable of doing both? while you have time, weigh all your options.

What is everyone's favorite subject in school? or was

math and computer science. now that i've gotten older, i think i just wanna open and run a food truck. kinda funny how what i think i wanna be when i grow up has absolutely nothing to do with what i spent years in school studying...

I'm entirely opposed to punitive justice... people need more support, not punishment. I'm also an advocate of prison abolition. In general, I think institutions do much, much more violence than individuals.

IMHO i'd say it depends. here in the US we've resigned ourselves to treat prisons and punishment as a panacea. have a drug problem? we give them 7-15 years. murder? with a good lawyer, deferred ajudication. public defender? kiss your ass goodbye. mental issues? it's a revolving door between prison and homelessness.

but the question always remains what do you do with the worst of the worst? those with mental issues, like paranoid schizophrenia, might do well in an institution, and it might even be easy to get citizens to accept and help pay for institutions that can treat those types. for drug dealers and for that matter users, it gets harder because people have a natural tendency to look down on them and blame them for their own issues. nevermind systemic unemployment or other lack of opportunities (mind you i'm commenting about the US). child molesters and rapist? again, the situation gets more muddied. i suspect the first inclination many people have is to castrate them or worse, and i can imagine that some, especially those involved would vote for worse options. finally, what do you do about repeat murderers? those who aren't criminally insane, but constantly resort to killing as an answer.they already see life as expendable. do you lock them away for life? do you make an example out of them?

I'm giving you my own personal opinion, so i suspect that for many of us, will have to agree to disagree. Ok, that all said... i too, like Suosiki, am not completely opposed to punitive justice. my only problem, and again i am only speaking about here in the US, is that too many people (especially in my state) are mistakenly put to death because they received lousy legal representation. basically, if you have money, you can literally get away with murder. however, if you're poor, you'll spend 5-20 years on death row then they either fry you or poison you to death.

so i too would like to see more support for those with drug issues or mental problems. absolutely. since i believe in second chances, i see value in really rehabilitating people (i.e. teaching them life skills) even for individuals who may have killed another person (but it depends on the situation). but the serious type (i.e. serial killers, mass murderers, repeat killers)? i disagree. IMO they have already fucked up more than once. if they constantly discard life, i think they have forfeited their lives as well. life in prison is too much a luxury for them and no amount ofrehabilitation can begin to heal the wounds created. but again, that is JMHO.

@Utoptia

Would add Amano Shuninta, Yamaji Ebine and Akiyama Haru too (well, in octave character aren't old, but it's really focused on adult life so..). EDIT : And Nishi Uko, how could I forget Nishi-sensei.

I'm not familiar with Akiyama Haru. I will look for their work on here.

Yes, how could you forget Nishi-sensei! If I were offered the chance to intern or be her assistant for a year with no pay, i'd do it in a heartbeat. her style and the simplicity of her stories are amazing. i know we each have our favs, but stories like "To Meet" are... *ahem* sorry for all the fangirl fawning there.

As far as I can tell, Japanse aren't usually fond of "deep" and too mature plot. That'd explain why anime like EVA or cowboy bebop were a flop.

Did not realize they were considered flops in Japan. IMO Bebop is a cult classic and genius for when it came out. I'm also of the opinion its OST is brilliant and doesn't have a single bad track when you omit the talking parts.

I'm hoping for more Adult life too. That said, a high school setting doens't mean that it can't be deep and mature. Let's take for example my favorite yuri manga.

boy oh boy i have not read Pieta in a while. Thanks for mentioning it. totally need to reread. Also, Private Report looks interesting. I cannot say i completely connect with the main character, but i sympathize with her. it looks like a interesting read. Again thanks for listing it.

EDIT: i see this was recently released but somehow missed it.

@Rina

I understand your point about escapism and like you said, we each have our own prefences. I suppose I'm in the same camp with Zuljin where I'd like to read more stories about people like me dealing with similar issues (movies like "This is 40" and "It's in the Water" come to mind). I also wish there were more yuri manga that are of the sci-fi/fantasy variety. That, of course, wouldn't necessarily have anything to do with or be based in a high school/college settings.

BTW, it's cool you write fanfic. yes or no, do you post on any fanfic sites (i'm not asking where for privacy reasons),? also, are your stories based on TV shows/movies or are they original content?

i originally posted this question in the Heartbreak discussion, but i thought it might be more appropriate in this discussion. that said...

wrt yuri/shoujo-ai stories, i realize that high school settings are a prevalent theme in the genre, but i wonder why more authors do not create stories with older characters that aren't college-aged or 20-something y/o. Mangaka like Morishima Akiko and Takamiya Jin are somewhat exceptions because they have released books that have more adult characters discussing adult themes (while i would argue that in Jin's case, she's more tethered to the school girl setting). Long story short, do mangaka rehash the high school/college theme because they figure it's an easy sell, because that's what most people expect and might find anything that is "other" off-putting, or because the genre is slowly maturing and embracing acceptance of lesbianism? and if it is slowly maturing, do any of you think there will be a new yurinaissance where the majority of new manga and anime produced foregoes old tropes and themes for the "other"?

LOL, i like what you've called this... an "asspull". LMAO!

It's a very common phrase in certain corners of the internet.

@Nidienne - yeah, i know the term, i was laughing because it's the first time someone on here has called it out as such, but thanks for providing the link.
